AAI Enablement Guide
v1.8 September 2021

Course Enablement Paths

The course enablement paths detailed in this document, are designed to inform the AAI
community on the requirements instructors must meet in order to become approved to teach
each AWS course. The purpose of these requirements is to ensure all AAIs are fully prepared
to deliver AWS courses and provide the best customer experience possible.

The requirements below are mandatory for every AAI. AWS has sole discretion to amend the
enablement requirements as necessary. AAIs may be asked to complete additional
enablement steps when a major update or new course release dictates additional
requirements.

In addition to the course enablement paths, this guide provides helpful information about
preparing for AWS certifications, how to keep up to date on AWS technology, and what is
expected of an AAI before, during, and after a delivery.

Recommended preperation before first delivery: Familiarize yourself with the course slides
and labs. Shadow a course, when possible, to see how a tenured AAI is delivering it.

Please note that to be considered as authorized to teach any topic above Architecting on
AWS, after your Instructor Candidate Authorization, you need to send an email to aai-
program@amazon.com and/or your Regional AAI Program Manager to let them know
that you feel ready to take on this new challenge. The team will then verify that you have
completed all mandatory steps and mark you as approved if applicable.

Once an instructor has successfully passed their Instructor Candidate Authorization and
approved to deliver Architecting on AWS, they are then eligible to deliver the following
courses, subject to fulfilling the prerequisites, achieving the relevant AWS Certification and
completing preparation requirements detailed in the following enablement paths:

AAI Delivery Enablement Guide
v1.8 September 2021

• Content Preparation: The AAI should start their learning journey by reviewing
the documentation dedicated to this topic in VitalSource Explore, and testing
the labs in Qwiklabs. To complement the self-study, we recommend that AAIs
shadow an experienced instructor delivering the course for extra tips on
delivery skills and demos.

• Narrative Validation: No Digital Instructor Guide is currently available for this

course. We recommend shadowing a course on this topic as a final step before
the first delivery.

How to Prepare for AWS Certifications

Having a strong, hands-on based, AWS knowledge is a great benefit when preparing for
certification exams but might not be enough. Please review the following resources when
preparing:
• AWS Exam Blueprints & Whitepapers
o The Exam blueprints will give the student guidance on what the exams will
cover, broken down in sections and corresponding weights. This will help
students in focusing their preparation effort and assessing their knowledge.
• AWS Self-Paced Labs
o For the necessary hands-on part of the exam preparation, AWS self-paced labs
will provide hands-on practice in a live AWS environment with AWS services and
real-world cloud scenarios
• AWS FAQs
o AWS services FAQs are a great source of knowledge, especially for the associate
level certification exams as many of the questions in the exams themselves have
their answers in this section. Review it carefully before sitting for one of the
certifications exams.
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect Official Study Guide: Associate Exam
o The official study guide will provide all the necessary information to pass the
exam. Go through the review questions first to assess your knowledge and then
work backwards through the content to cover for any weak areas.

v1.8 September 2021

AWS Courses are subject to numerous minor and major updates. Make sure you are always up to
date on the latest releases by visiting http://releases.awstc.com/ where you can find a list of the
latest updates in our teaching material.

Build Your Technical Edge

There are plenty of resources available to gather AWS knowledge, starting of course with the
many official AWS courses available.

An AWS Authorized Instructor should not limit their knowledge to what is on the course
materials, but will be curious and explore the AWS platform through multiple angles.
As general guidance, here is a list of qualified sources to gather technical knowledge, examples
and most importantly a variety of narrative to learn from when presenting content to
audiences. You can access the consolidated list of links below.
- AWS YouTube Official Channel
- Hands-on experience:
o AWS Labs GitHub Repository
o AWS Quick Starts
- AWS Whitepapers
- AWS Blogs

Maintain Your Technical Edge

Staying on top of new services and features of the AWS platform is not easy and requires
persistent effort.

Suggested ways to stay on top of things, other than constantly coming back to the above
resources:
• Build and maintain your own demos
• Take AWS classes and certification exams
• Attend webinars
• Prepare for additional courses and boot camps
• Join AAI Forge monthly sessions or watch recordings if you couldn’t attend them (2020
recordings / 2021 recordings)

Your Role as an Instructor in an AWS Class

v1.8 September 2021

Classroom Management

As the Instructor, you are in charge of the class and you will need to be able to handle a wide
variety of situations including (this may vary based on your organization):
• Any administrative issues that arise, such as:
o student registrations
o buying courseware in Gilmore
o managing lab environments in QwikLabs
• Pre- and post-course administrative tasks such as email communications.
• Time management – courses typically run from 9AM to 5PM with coffee breaks and an
hour-long lunch break
• People management
• Get to know your Students, ask questions and understand their motivations and
expectations

Content Delivery

The Instructor’s primary responsibility is to present the course to the students.

This requires a good background knowledge of all the topics discussed on the course slides, and
some practical experience in using those services. There are some tips on acquiring platform
knowledge in later sections of this document

General Best Practices

• Try to be as interactive as possible; do not to fall into lecture mode.
• Encourage students to ask questions, check your students’ understanding, ask them
questions, ask for real-world use-cases and experience from the students. Some courses
explicitly have group discussions or group exercises as part of the materials, and it’s your
responsibility to facilitate those.
• Make eye contact, move around the room, use voice inflection as an instrument, vary
your tone, and emphasize key passages.
• If in a virtual setup, make sure students participate, whether via the chatroom or on
camera if they are willing to share their video (during breaks for example). Depending on
the delivery platform you are using, please identify your options for replacing
whiteboarding or any other interactive activity you would be doing if in an in-person
delivery.

You CAN:
• Change up your presentation by white boarding topics you are comfortable with.
• Integrate demos and walkthroughs to illustrate topics

21 aws.amazon.com/training
AAI Delivery Enablement Guide
v1.8 September 2021

• Add additional depth beyond the slides based on your experiences, student interest and
questions

You CANNOT:
• Add or modify slides (the official slides have been through Amazon legal approval)
• Halfheartedly follow the slides, or worse yet, read them to the students.

Getting the most out of your delivery time

Each course is not merely a collection of slides, but a cohesive narrative that enables students to
acquire knowledge and understanding of specific aspects of the AWS Platform. Keep this in
mind when preparing for a course and for each delivery.

Each module has specific learning objectives: study them, be sure you really understand what
each module is targeting to achieve. Make them yours, ensure that you're able to elaborate on
them and dive deep while maintaining a sense of cohesion when explaining. Depending on a
variety of factors, you may struggle with timings during a class: being able to summarize and
deliver the appropriate messaging of a module is a key element of a successful class.

Students have a better retention when content is exposed through coherent storytelling: when
preparing for the delivery of this content, focus on the technical side but also on how to tell a
story that will make sense for the students and that will enable them to work on the AWS
platform. For key concepts, use practical examples drawn from personal experience and case
studies.

Quick tips for your delivery

• Learn the names of your students.
• Do not be afraid to say "I don't know it" - see below
• Read "100 Things Every Presenter Needs To Know About People"
• Keep track of all the questions you were asked during each delivery, even if you didn't
have to research for the answer

Lab Support

Almost all AWS courses have self-directed labs for the students. The instructor is expected to
manage the Qwiklabs environment for the class (creating classes, registering students, pre-
warming labs with the “hot lab” feature, activating and ending labs, etc.).

An instructor should run through all labs in a class before teaching it. It is the instructor’s
responsibility to introduce each lab, inform students of any errata related to the lab and to
assist students during the lab.

22 aws.amazon.com/training
AAI Delivery Enablement Guide
v1.8 September 2021

Students may have trouble with the environment, or with tools such as Putty, as well as making
mistakes while following the lab instructions; the instructor should be familiar with solving all
types of these problems.

Answering Questions

An instructor should be able to answer straightforward student questions, especially questions

regarding AWS core services, or questions that are clearly within the scope of the course.
However, there will always be questions that you can’t answer; you still have to produce some
kind of response! You will almost certainly be faced with some of the following:
• Straightforward, factual questions you just don’t know the answer to.
o Don’t bluff, and don’t guess. Make a note of the question, research it during a
break, and be sure to get back to the student with an answer.

• Questions involving competitors.

o Please focus your answer on AWS services; discussing competitors can only make
you look boastful, or uninformed (if your knowledge is out of date), or biased
(thus losing customer trust and possibly starting an argument). AAIs do not
engage in conversations putting AWS against competitors and do not mention
competition if not asked directly by students. We are in class to allow students to
learn about AWS and the classroom is not the place where to fight against
competitors

• Questions involving integration with third-party products that you do not know much
about.
o It might be worth asking if any other student has faced a similar problem or uses
the same product; otherwise, see the next question.

• Highly complicated or workload-specific questions.

o For these, you should redirect customers to support, solutions architects,
technical account managers or other specialists.

• Questions about newly-released products and services.

o Students are often very knowledgeable about our products, and enthusiastic
about keeping up with new features. It’s a good idea for an instructor to keep up
with the launch announcements, but occasionally a student will beat you to it.

• Questions about unreleased services, the AWS roadmap, future expansion, the “secret
sauce” inner workings of a specific service, etc.

23 aws.amazon.com/training
AAI Delivery Enablement Guide
v1.8 September 2021

o Please restrict your answers to publicly-available information from official AWS

sources. Even if a customer is under NDA, that does not mean you can just tell
them whatever you happen to know. Many instructors try to avoid reading non-
public documentation, so as to not accidentally leak information.

Getting Ready

Though this process is covered in the AAI Onboarding Guide, it is worth mentioning that it still
applies to the first run of any other AWS course.

Platform Knowledge

For your first delivery of any course, focus on the core services and the services actually covered
in detail during the course. You should also do labs and practical work with the services.
Recommendations for delivery preparation:
1. Go through all course slides in one pass to understand the flow of the course, and then
another deeper pass to understand the detail of each slide. There are notes under each
slide. Ideally, during the course delivery, slides should be reminders and never a script
you would rely on. Again, try to build a cohesive story during this phase of the
preparation.
2. Practice all the labs in the course. Make sure you understand every step.
3. Keep preparing and whenever possible, schedule an appointment with a peer/buddy/tech
lead who is delivering this course already. The goal is to present a few modules in front
of the person and gather genuine feedback on your presentation.
4. It is normal to feel unsatisfied with your first few deliveries of the course. As long as the
main objectives of the course were met, this is a healthy sign that you are trying to
optimize your delivery and increase your knowledge of a course

Before a class

Pre-course emails
Some instructors like to send a pre-course email to students. You can use this approach to introduce
yourself to the students and establish your presence in the upcoming class. Engaging early will help
to resolve some administrative tasks such enrollment in a Learning Management System, signing up
for the lab environment and/or eVantage site, saving some precious time during in the
classroom.

One or two days before the class starts, please make sure that the class is correctly setup in the
Qwiklabs environment and that the Gilmore Student Guides have been sent out to class
participants. Some instructors like to receive a list of students before the class starts, in order to

understand the target audience and adapt their delivery accordingly. Please discuss this with
your Training Coordinator.

During a Class

In-Class Support

It’s always valuable to get prompt support within classes. These are several ways to get support:

1. From the AWS Authorized Instructor community and the AAI Program team - this is your
preferred option as you will reach multiple peers and AWS employees
a. Be sure to be added to the following Chime room: AWS T&C Hybrid Training Q&A
(external room). This room is only accessible to approved AAIs.

2. Qwiklabs and Gilmore support can be found here:

• Gilmore 24X7 Support:
o Toll Free (U.S.A. and Canada only): +1-844-771-3829
o Toll Free (International): +1-613-271-3829
o Email:aws@gilmore.ca
• Qwiklabs

After a Class

Gathering Course Feedback

An instructor cannot wrap-up a class without allocating an adequate amount of time for
gathering feedback.
The most effective time to collect feedback is at the lunch break of the last day of delivery:
when students come back from lunch, allocate 5 minutes before resuming the lecture, to obtain
the feedback. This will produce a high completion rate.

Wrap-up email

After each class, a post-class email is the preferred way to thank your students and share
additional information (links to demos, blog posts…etc.)

NOTE: Always follow the practice of emailing yourself, and putting all recipients in the Bcc. It is
crucial for privacy, especially when we have multiple customers attending the course.

Answering open questions

25 aws.amazon.com/training
AAI Delivery Enablement Guide
v1.8 September 2021

Make sure to follow up on any questions left open during the course – for example, any
questions that were sent to SAs or technical specialists. It’s usually better in these cases to reply
to those interested or asked the question initially to avoid spamming others.
