Chapter 3:
Rocks

Concrete A hard, strong material made by mixing cement, sand, and broken
rocks with water, normally used for building

Gemstone A precious or semi-precious stone that can be used in jewellery when it


is cut and polished

Granite A very hard type of rock that is used in buildings and monuments

Gravel Small pieces of stones and pebbles

Hard-wearing Lasting for a long time

Marble A kind of stone that is often polished and used in buildings and statues
Chapter 3

Polish To make something smooth and shiny by rubbing it

Slate A type of hard rock that splits easily into thin layers

Speckled Covered with many small marks or spots

Weathering The breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces by the forces of nature
such as wind and water
