Intro:
Good Day! Division of Negros Occidental. Hello pupils! Welcome to our Mathematics class where
we explore, have fun, learn mathematics skills that we could use in our daily life.
This is teacher Gencel Ann Villanueva, be ready as we embark to a new journey in learning Mathematics 4.
Sit back, relax and enjoy!
Today we will discuss about the place value and value of a digit in a given decimal number through
hundredths. So, what are you waiting for Let’s go! Prepare yourself with a pen, paper and self- learning
module in Mathematics 4 as we are about to start our lesson.
Before we answer these questions, let us first look for the details of the problem to understand the
problem better and to answer the questions correctly. Are you ready? Let’s go!
Now, question number 1. Who planted palay? What would be the correct answer? Think and share…
Answer: Allan planted the palay.
How many kilograms of palay did he sell? Think and share you answer…
Answer: He sell 10 kilograms of palay.
How many correct answers did you get? Can you now answer word problem involving decimals?
Now, to answer the question in 30. 14 what are the place value and value of 1 and 4?
Decimal number is a number that has a decimal point, followed by digits that show a value smaller than
one.
We use decimals every day while dealing with money, weight, length etc. Decimal numbers are used in
situations where more precisions are required that the whole numbers can provide. For example, when we
calculate our weight on the weighing machine, we do not always find the weight equal to a whole number
on the scale.
Now, let us study the place value chart to find the place value of 1 and 4. We will start with number 1.
One is the first number after the decimal point. So, its place value is tenths.
How about 4? Four is the second number after the decimal point, Therefore, the place value of four is
hundredths.
This time, let us again look in our place value chart, so that we can find the value of the decimal numbers 1
and 4.
As you can see, 1 is in the tenths place, to get the value of one we will multiply 1 to 0. 1 (1x 0.1) to get the
value of 1. Therefore, the value of 1 is 0.1 (One- tenths). Let us proceed to the value of 4. Four is in the
hundredths place. Multiply 4 to 0.01 (4 x 0.01) to get the value of 4. Therefore, the value of 4 is 0.04 (Four-
hundredths).
In 30.14, the digit 3 is a place holder for the ones place. The digit 1 is in the tenths place. Its value is 30. 1.
The digit 4 is in the hundredths place. Its value is 0.04. Hence, 30.14 means 1 tenth and 4 hundredths.
The decimal point separates the whole numbers from the decimal numbers.
Are you still Ok kids? Now let us practice what you have learned.
This time, let us try answering questions to measure what have you learned.
Question number 1, What separates the whole numbers from the decimal numbers?
Next question, what is the place value of number after the decimal point?
Question number 3, what is the place value of the second number after the decimal point?
Let’s move to question number 4, How to get the value of a digit in the tenths place?
Amazing kids! Multiply the tenths digit to 0.1 (one tenths) is the correct answer.
Let us have one last question, how to get the value of a digit in hundredths place?
Great Job! Multiply the hundredths digit by 0.01 (One hundredths) is the correct answer.
Well to fully understand our lesson I will let you go through with the activity which I’m sure you will be going
to enjoy.
Now I want you to scan you Learning Activity Sheet in week 8 and look for Exercises and activities. Answer
A, B and C.
In Activity A. You will be going to complete the table by giving the place value and value of the underlined
digits. An example is done for you.
The given example is 0.15 the underlined digit is 1, since 1 is the first number after the decimal point so its
place value is tenths. Then, we will multiply 1 to 0.1 to get the value of the digit. The answer is 0. 1 or One
tenths.
1. Let us proceed to question number 1, What is the place value and value of 0. 26? The underlined
digit is 2. The place value is tenths and the value is 0.2.
2. The given digits is 0.39. What is the place value and value of the underlined digit? The underlined
digit is 9 its place value is hundredths and the value is 0.09.
3. Next, 0.45. The place value is hundredths and the value of the underlined digit is 0.05.
4. What is the place value and value of the given digit 0.76, where the underlined digit is 6? The place
value of 6 is hundredths and the value is 0.06.
5. Lastly, the given digit is 0.94. The place value of 9 is tenths and its value is 0.9.
Well, to find out whether you understand our lesson or not, Let us answer the Take the challenge C on you
learning activity sheet. Read and understand the given problem and solve for the correct answer. Put your
answer on your answer sheet.
1. Diana measures the dimensions of her kitchen window as she plans to dress them with blinds. Find
the place value of the digit 6, if the window is 44. 56 inches long.
Answer: Hundredths.
2. Vivian took 25. 34 minutes to cover 5 laps around the park. What is the place value of the digit 3 in
the given number?
Answer: Tenths
3. Rodel harvested some vegetables from the garden. The squash weighed 0. 95 kilograms. What is
the place value of 9 in 0. 95 kilograms of squash? What is the value of 5 in 0. 95?
4. Alma paid Php 99. 75 for a bath towel. Write the digit in the tenths place. What is the value of the
digit in the hundredths place?
Answer: 7, 0.05
It was fun working with you with the activities we have completed. Thank you for your active
participation.
