Formulae to calculate No of Turn of solenoid:

1) Calculate Anchor spring force (F1).

2) Mechanism trip force: (60-80gm)(F2)

3) Actual Force (F) of the system is

F= (F1+F2) gms

4) Dia of coil rivet in which magnetic flux is produced (D).

D=5.5mm

5) Area of coil rivet (A) is A=(πD²) mm²

6) Flux density generated in coil (B) is derived as:

The coil is comprised of many turns of tightly wound copper wire .When
current flows through the wire it creates a strong magnetic flux path
which flows around the coil and through its centre in a doughnut shape.
The plunger is round in shape with a positive cone on one end. When
inserted into the centre of the coil it concentrates the magnetism still
more. The plunger’ conical surface mates with a negative cone at the
bottom of the field casing to provide a large area of flux transfer and a
better force/strike characteristic.

The Force required to move the plunger is:

F= A B2 N
2 µ˚
B= Sqrt (F x µ˚) wb/m² or Tesla
(0.051 A)
Where µ˚ =Permeability of air, 4πΧ10ˉ7 Tesla meter/Amp(Tm/A)

7) Magneto motive Force set up by the coil is

MMF= nI =∫ H.dl

Assuming uniformity of field and uniform gap length

MMF=H x lg

Where lg=distance moved by plunger to trip the mechanism.

MMF (air gap) = (H Χ lg) by using equation B=µ˚ H

µ˚
MMF per coil Turn= 796178 x B x lg

8) Calculation of Exciting Current

Exciting Current=multiply factor Χ Rated Current

9) Calculation of Magnetic Coil Turn (N)

N= MMF
Exciting Current
Formulae to calculate No of Turn of solenoid:
Calculation for 6A
1) Compute Anchor spring force (F1).

F1 = 34 gm

2) Mechanism trip force: (60-80gm)(F2)

3) Actual Force (F) of the system is

F= (F1+F2) gms
=34+80
=114 gms

4) Dia of coil rivet in which magnetic flux is produced (D).

D=5.5mm

5) Area of coil rivet (A) is A=(πD²) mm²

4
A= πD²
4
= 3.14 x 0.0055 x 0.0055
4
= 2.37 x 10-5 mm2

6) Flux density generated in coil (B) is derived as:

F= A B2 Newton
2 µ˚

B= Sqrt (F x µ˚) wb/mm² or Tesla

(0.051 A)
Where µ˚ =Permeability of air, 4πΧ10ˉ7 tesla meter per ampere

= Sqrt 0.114 x 4πΧ10ˉ7

0.05 x 2.37x10-5

= 0.34 wb/mm2
7) Magneto motive Force set up by the coil is

MMF= nI =∫ H.dl

Assuming uniformity of field and uniform gap length

MMF=H x lg

Where lg=distance moved by plunger to trip the mechanism.

=1.5 x 10-3 m

MMF (air gap) = (H Χ lg) by using equation B=µ˚ H

µ˚

MMF per coil Turn= 796178 x B x lg

= 796178 x 0.34 x 1.5 x 10-3

= 406 Amp-Turn

8) Calculation of Exciting Current

Exciting Current=multiply factor Χ Rated Current

Rated current = 6 A
Multiply factor = 6.2 (for C curve tripping characteristic)

Exciting Current= 6.2 Χ 6

= 37.2 A
9) Calculation of Magnetic Coil Turn (N)

N= MMF
Exciting Current

= 410
37.2

= 11 Turn
