Fluids and Lubricating Greases 1 Introduction

1 Introduction

1.1 Safety First

Always read the information in the safety manual before starting to use the machine or be-
fore starting any maintenance work.

1.2 The Purpose of This Guide

The Fluids and Lubricating Greases Reference guide is intended to:
• Provide information on the machine-specific fluid and grease types used at the Epiroc
Örebro factory
• Provide information on the specifications and standards of the fluids and greases
This guide does not replace the necessary training that is required for handling machines
and related equipment.

1.3 Target Group

The information in this publication is intended for everyone involved in the application, op-
eration, and maintenance of the machine and related equipment. All readers are expected
to possess basic competence regarding mining methods, construction methods, and the
machines used for construction and mining operation.

1.4 General Recommendations for Fluids and Lubricating

Greases
All fluids and greases are essential to preventive maintenance. It is important to follow the
instructions in the machine-specific operation and maintenance manuals.
• Select the correct quality and viscosity grade of fluids and greases to improve the effi-
ciency and extend the service life of components.
• Use fluids and greases that meet or exceed the requirement specifications.
• Read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before using the fluid or grease and take needed
measures for safe handling.
• Never mix fluids and greases of a different type or grade.
• Contact the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or refer to the OEM manuals for
more information, if necessary.
• Dispose of used fluids and greases in accordance with local environmental regula-
tions.
• Due to regional availability, operating conditions, and continual development, specific
brands and types of fluids and greases in this manual are not applicable to all situa-
tions.
• Contact the local Epiroc representative for questions related to fluids and greases.

1.5 Temperature Zones

All fluids pertain to an intended temperature zone.

3.1 Hydraulic Oil

The oil serves as the power transmission medium, system coolant, and lubricant for the hy-
draulic system. The quality of hydraulic oil is important to the satisfactory performance of
the hydraulic system.

! NOTE: Use the suitable hydraulic oil for the specific ambient temperature.

NOTE: Surplus oil must be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner as pre-

! scribed by local authorities.

Machine Temperature Zone Oil Used at Factory Specification

All applicable models Standard Tellus S2V 46 ISO VG: 46 / VI: 143

Use a mineral-based or synthetic (polyalphaolefin or diester) hydraulic oil that contains in-
hibiting properties for rust, wear, oxidation, and foam as well as having air and water sepa-
ration ability. Select an oil with a Viscosity Grade (VG) and a Viscosity Index (VI) that is ap-
plicable for the intended temperature zone. An oil with a high viscosity index is less tem-
perature dependent.

3.2 Compressor Oil

Compressor oil is critical for reliability and reduces the operating costs throughout the life-
time of the compressor.

NOTE: Epiroc recommends only using EPIROC compressor oil for the single-stage and
! two-stage compressors. Use of another oil is at the customer's own risk.
