1.1 Introduction

Community health centers provides accessible, affordable primary care service in a community
based catered for populations with limited access to health care. Not all people can have access to
high quality health care that public health center offers. But with the help of community health
centers, people who are less fortunate can be catered becoming more accessible despite of the
status in life. They offer primary health, oral and mental health or substance abuse services, and
preventive health care. They are also capable of supporting services such as translation,
transportation, case management, health education, and social services. Its accessibility has a huge
factor in ensuring its usage and help to the targeted population (Silva & Johnson, 2009).

As this field involves health and wellness of human being, its structure has to be giving a feel of
wellness making it more welcoming to the users. Humanity has changed in their relation to nature
which can be reflected with what is being expressed (Totaforti, 2018). The built space is designed by
nature that is not marginalized and irrelevant to the health and happiness of a person (Kellert,

2012). It is important to create a design oriented for the physical and emotional reattachment with
the nature (Totaforti, 2018). Biophilic design improves our wellness and healing with the benefits of
reducing stress, improving creativity and clarity of our thoughts (Browning, William; Ryan, Catherine;
Clancy, Joseph, 2014). Its integration to spaces supports our entirety. With this study, it is given an
emphasis on the application of biophilic design to the community health center in Davao. Related
literatures have showed the great effects of the said design as it is advocated for the wellness of a
human being. Its implementation to a health center establishment catered for specific population
can determine the design’s significance and a great addition of knowledge for the implication of
biophilic design in this specific structure. As the structure’s purpose is to provide health care services
for the less fortunate, it is also important to consider that the structure also provide a sense of
wholeness and positivity in mind and in health of the users adding its benefit for good and wellness.

1.2 Study Area

Figure 1. Study Area (source: Google Maps)

With the definition of community health center which centers on high quality health
care services for less fortunate, the study area has to match the qualities of the said
establishment. Royal Valley Barangay Health Station, located in Royal Valley, Bangkal
Davao City, is a health center that is nearly accessible for the residents of the said barangay.
It is situated besides the Talomo Proper Satellite Barangay Hall which is also a public space.
The said health center offers services such as check-ups, immunization program, family
planning, BP taking and among others which matches the criteria of a community design.
Another reason for choosing this area is the isolated manner of the structure being catered for
the residents of royal valley which gives the idea of accessibility. Its biophilic elements are
also present, but the question is “was it enough to meet user’s satisfaction?”. That’s why

assessing its user’s satisfaction with regards to its biophilic elements can help in determining
the opportunities in improving the structure.
2.1 (RRL 1) Human-centred health-care environments: a new framework for biophilic design

Authored by Bekir Huseyin Tekin and Rosa Urbano Gutierrez, this study focuses

2.2 (RRL 2) Applying the benefts of biophilic theory to hospital design

Authored by Simona Totaforti, this study aims to give importance in the constant
change in designing spaces that is aimed to reconnect people with the presence of nature in
urban and healthcare setting. This also intends to give contribution in the new architectural
design for hospitals and open opportunities for highlighting the features of health-inducing
building.
