Subject: Inorganic Chemistry-II (CHM-602)

Note: a) Answer any five full questions. b) Write diagrams or equations wherever necessary.

1. A. Comment on each of the following observations;


i) [Fe(NO2)6]3- is a low spin complex whereas [FeBr6]3- is a high spin complex
ii) [Cr(CN)6]4- is a strong field complex whereas [Cr(H2O)6]2+ is a weak field complex
iii) Fluoride ligand brings out the maximum oxidation state while carbon monoxide stabilizes
lowest oxidation states of transition metals.

B. Predict the number of unpaired electrons and the magnetic moments at 25o C for each of the

following complex ions; i) [Fe(CN)6]4- ii) [Ru(NH3)6]3+ iii) [Cr(NH3)6]2+ iv) [Fe(CN)6]3-

2. A. i) Write MOELD for the formation of octahedral ML6 complex without pi-bonding interactions.
ii) Describe the different magnetic states of matter with illustrative examples.

B. Draw and describe the curve showing the degree of saturation of hemoglobin and myoglobin as
a function of the pressure of oxygen. List six conditions necessary for a biological catalyst to
function efficiently. (6+4)

3. A. How do you define essentiality of elements? List six essential metals helpful to life along with
the functions of biomolecules containing these elements. Write four advantages and four
disadvantages of enzymes as biocatalysts.

B. Write a critical account of the essential features of the following;

i) Ion exchange chromatography ii) Size-exclusion chromatography

iii) Continuous extraction iv) Soxhlet extraction

4. A. Describe the different stages of elution of solutes from a binary mixture in column
chromatography. Discuss four factors that affect column efficiency.

B. i) Why is it difficult to reduce dinitrogen to ammonia by successive protonation steps? Explain


the function of nitrogenase with the help of a simplified scheme.
ii) Describe the working of the thermal conductivity detector used in gas chromatography.

5. A. i) Define each of the following terms and provide suitable examples;
a) Coordination isomers b) Metalloenzyme models.
ii) Explain the principles of electrogravimetric analysis. How do you test for completeness of
electrolysis during electrochemical deposition of copper at a platinum electrode?
iii) Describe metal toxicity and metal based drugs with suitable illustrative examples.

B. i) What are the practical considerations in choosing a solvent for extraction purpose?
ii) Discuss two advantages and two disadvantages of supercritical fluid extraction process.
iii) How much more effective will four extractions using 5.0 mL of 1-hexanol be than
using one 20 mL portion? Assume a 10 mL volume of water, a distribution ratio of 2
and a sample of 0.5 g. (6+4)

6. A. What is John-Teller effect? Sketch and explain three types of distortions observed in octahedral
complexes. Give an informative account of spectrochemical series.

B. Describe the following with respect to their structural features and functional aspects;
i) Carboxypeptidase ii) Cyanocobalamin iii) Carbonic anhydrase iv) Cytochromes (6+4)
