LESSON 2: ARTS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA

What is the basic foundation of Asian Art?


Asian art is basically religious in nature. Many forms of visual arts are
based on the life of mythical beings, gods and goddesses, and legendary heroes.
Asian artists produced artworks that are reflections of their religious belief and
knowledge.

Kebaya and Batik shirts – are upper garments that served as


the national costumes paired with;
Kemben and (Sarong) a cloth wrapped around the hip, they
represent the country which shows the heavy influence of
Islam
Sarong (lower cloth) – are designed with batik

The kebaya is formal dress for many Indonesian women.


Color: Primary, secondary, and tertiary colors and pastels are some of them; they
are harmonized with earth colors and their
monochromes

Ganesh – an elephant god


- survives the long Hindu traditions in Java,
Indonesia
Color: Monochromes of yellow, orange,
magenta, ochre and black

Golden

What is Batik?

- is a Malay word that means “to dot”


- Indonesian origin
- is the method of dyeing mainly on cottons in the
traditional colors of blue, brown, and red in which
patterned areas are covered with wax
- A famous textile painting that has been done by the
Egyptians and Indians.
- It has reached the Hindu and Malay countries.
- Java – reached the excellent dree of artistry in batik
- Has become an important expression of the arts and
culture of many countries in
Southeast Asia for more than 300 years now

SOME MOTIFS IN BATIK DESIGN

Batik Pekalongan – influenced by both


Dutch, European, and Chinese
motifs
Buketan motifs – show European flower
bouquet

Cirebon batik – shows sea creatures


- Also called Trusmi batik.
Megamundung (raincloud) – most
popular Cirebon motif.
- Chinese influence

Batik Java Hokokai – demonstrates Japanese influenced


motifs
- One of the most beautiful and noble batik in the whole
of Asia.
Japanese inspired motifs are:
- Flowers in garden surrounded by butterflies
- Sakuran (cherry blossoms)
- Seruni or kiku (chrysanthemum, Japan’s national
flower, and symbol of the emperor
- Butterflies ( symbol of female elegance in Japanese
culture

Lasem batik – characterized by a bright red color


called abang getih pithik (chicken blood
red)
- heavily influenced by Chinese culture

Batik Pedalaman (Inland batik) – oldest form of batik


in Java
Characteristics are:
1. Color: has earthly color tones (black, indigo,
brown, and dark yellow, sometimes against a
white background

2. Motif: according to social class and function


suitable for women, or for specific occasion
