Direction: Write everything in your notebook. Do the activities on a piece of paper.

The Brain Parts and its Functions and Processes

1. Frontal Lobe

Location:
➢ The frontal lobes are in the front part of your brain, right behind your
forehead.

Functions and Processes:

➢ It is in charge of cognition and memory.
➢ It is also responsible for a person’s ability to concentrate, provide judgment,
perform analysis, solve a problem, establish a plan, and present personality
including emotional traits.
➢ This is the largest lobe, and it controls voluntary movement, speech,
personality, and intellect.

2. Parietal Lobe

Location:
➢ The parietal lobes are near the center of your brain.

Functions and Processes:

➢ It is interrelated to the integration of information from various senses.
➢ Some of its roles include spatial orientation, visual perception, parts of
speech, and pain and touch sensations.
➢ It contributes to the interpretation of touch.

3. Temporal Lobe

Location:
➢ These parts of the brain are near your ears on each side of your brain.

Functions and Processes:

➢ The temporal lobes are important in being able to recall words or places.
➢ It also helps recognize people, understand language, and interpret other
people’s emotions.

4. Occipital Lobe

Location:
➢ The occipital lobes are in the back of your brain.

Functions and Processes:

➢ It is also known as the visual cortex for it is considered as the visual
processing center of the brain, in which human dreams originate.
➢ Occipital lobes control how you process shapes and colors.

5. Cerebellum

Location:
➢ The cerebellum is in the back of your brain.

Functions and Processes:

➢ It is tasked with motion-related activities including timing and coordination.
➢ It maintains balance, posture, and fine motor skills.
➢ However, it is not responsible for initiating a certain movement.
➢ This part of the brain regulates fear and pleasure responses, and some
cognitive functions such as attention.

6. Brainstem

Location:
➢ The brainstem is in the lower part of the brain.

Functions and Processes:

➢ The brainstem regulates many automatic body functions.
➢ It allows the transfer of information from the brain down to the body, such
as beating of the heart and breathing.
➢ It connects the rest of the brain to the spinal cord.

The Wonders of the Human Brain

According to Phillips:
➢ the most complex organ in the human body
➢ a jelly-like mass of tissue, weighing around 1.4 kilograms, which contains a
remarkable one hundred billion nerve cells that is commonly known as
neurons.

According to Seladi-Shulman:
➢ an organ that is made up of a large mass of nerve tissue that is protected
within the skull.
➢ plays a role in just about every major body system.
➢ its functions include processing sensory information, regulating blood
pressure and breathing, and releasing hormones.

According to Mohsenin:
➢ there are six major parts of a brain namely, frontal lobe, parietal lobe,
occipital lobe, temporal lobe, cerebellum, and brain stem, which all receive
distinct functions.

How Does the Brain Work?

Howard Gardner’s Theory of Eight Multiple Intelligences

➢ emphasizes that every individual possesses all eight various intelligences.

Eight Multiple Intelligences

1. Verbal linguistics or the knowledge of language
2. Logical-mathematical or knowledge of numbers
3. Visual-spatial or knowledge of shapes and arts
4. Musical or knowledge of music and sound
5. Production, naturalistic or knowledge of nature and the environment
6. Bodily-kinesthetic or knowledge of movement and coordination
7. Interpersonal or knowledge of interconnecting with other individuals
8. Intrapersonal or knowledge of self-assessment

• According to Gardner each person holds these eight but does not master all
the same level.
• There may be others who excel in math but not that much in science.
• In other cases, some work best in language, numbers, and experiments but
cannot perform visual and performing arts.

The Law of Readiness by Thorndike

➢ This certain law in education states that learning can only take place when a
person is ready to learn.
➢ This law implies that there is a perfect time for a certain individual to
acquire a concept.
➢ Individuals learn best whenever they are ready to gain concepts, and this is
where motivation comes in.
➢ This element serves as a driving force for learners to be ready.
➢ Thus, knowing one’s brain dominance is vital to assess where one works
best and what things one needs to further strengthen.

Left Brain Dominance

➢ The left side of the brain is adept at tasks that involve logic, language, and
analytical thinking.
• strength in numbers, language, words, logic, inference, analysis, sequence,
and cause and effect.

Right Brain Dominance

➢ This side of the brain is best at expression and creative tasks.
• good in dealing with images, colors, rhythm, movement, dimension,
imagination, creativity, and daydreaming.

The Whole Brain Theory

Studies conducted on the brain often start with an attempt to understand a brain-
related disease or malfunction.

Scientists and their Theories

Paul Broca
➢ Conducted a study on the language and left-right brain specialization on a
patient who had problems with language.
➢ After several tests, Broca theorized that some language functions reside on
the left side of the brain.

Dr. Roger Sperry

➢ Conducted a study for epilepsy.
➢ Achieved 1981 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
➢ The Split-Brain Theory or The Split-Brain Experiments.
▪ He explained that the brain has two hemispheres that perform tasks
differently from each other.
▪ He discovered that the right brain was performing tasks that were
intuitive, creative, and synthesizing, while the left hemisphere was
more adept with analytical, logical, reasoning, and critical thinking.

Dr. Paul MacLean

➢ The Triune Brain Theory
▪ a theory that identified three distinct parts of the brain, namely: the
neocortex, limbic system, and reptilian complex.
▪ The neocortex or Rational Brain is responsible for intellectual tasks
such as language, planning, abstraction, and perception.
▪ The Limbic System or The Intermediate Brain is responsible for the
motivation and emotion involved in feeding, reproductive behavior,
and parental behavior.
▪ The Reptilian Complex or Primitive Brain controls the self-
preservation and aggressive behavior of humans similar to the
survival instincts of animals.

Ned Hermann
➢ Engineer at General Electric
➢ “Father of Brain Dominance Technology”

▪ Derived from observations and tests that the human body although
symmetrical and paired in almost all aspects, does not necessarily
function equally.
▪ A theory where each side of the brain controls different types of
thinking.
➢ Hermann’s Four Dominant Quadrants
▪ He concluded that the brain does not just have two parts but four: the
upper left and right hemispheres and the lower left and right limbic
halves.
▪ Hermann labeled the four quadrants of the brain as:
1. Upper Left (A) Cerebral Mode – Analytical
2. Lower Left (B) Limbic Mode – Organized
3. Lower Right (C) Limbic Mode – Interpersonal
4. Upper Right (D) Limbic System – Imaginative
