Text: Solidarity
That day; it was the turn of my father's farm. Early in the morning. young men came
out from all part of the village, holding their hoes on their shoulders. It was the
tradition, if an old man has only one male son: the friends of his son help him weed
his farm. Soon the work started. Encouraged by the rhythm of the drums, the young
men seemed to be tireless. Under the sight of the girls, the work became a competition.
From time to time, each girl comes to wipe the face of her favorite. As the work
continued, frightened small animals such as squirrels, rats, and snakes ran for their
lives. At midday, a very large space was cleared and soon women holding steamy
couscous dishes appeared and so, loud cries were heard to welcome them. Before the
sunset, the whole farm was cleared and we came back home tired but happy. I asked
my father why nobody was hurt or bitten by snake. He said that, the night before he
asked the ancestors to protect us.
