Thank you for choosing this Reading Eggs packet. This packet gets children to focus
on the shape of lowercase and uppercase letters. Recognising the shapes, with all of
their curves and straight lines is tricky, so children need lots of practise. Children need
to recognise how letters can look. Letter recognition is part of a bigger set of skills called
alphabet knowledge. Alphabet knowledge skills include being able to
recite the alphabet

WHY ALPHABET KNOWLEDGE?

Alphabet knowledge is having an awareness of the names and sounds of the letters of
the alphabet. It is a strong predictor of reading success and therefore a very important
early literacy skill. Knowing the letters of the alphabet and recognising them in print is a
critical skill to help children decipher text on the page.
