“Activity 4.3: AREA UNDER NORMAL CURVE AND Z - SCORES”

I. Graph and find the area under the given standard scores.
1. Assume that z is the standard score of a normally distributed set of data. Determine the
value of the following:
a. P(Z >1.35) f. P(Z ←1.27)
b. P(Z >2.63) g. P(−1.25< Z <2.54)
c. P(Z >−2.06) h. P(1.09< Z <2.54)
d. P(Z <1.25) i. P(−2.81< Z ←1.44)
e. P(Z <2.32)

II. Solve the following problems.

1. In the past Algebra classes, records show that the average score of the students in mid
– term exam was computed to be equal to 83.5 with a standard deviation of 4.82. If
there are 50 students in a particular class, then assuming normality of the distribution,
how many of the students are expected to have a mid – term score of

a. above 83.5?
b. below 70?
c. above 90?
d. between 75 and 85?

2. The average monthly income of the employees of Fashion Head Incorporated was
computed to be equal to ₱5, 500.00 with a standard deviation of ₱550.00. If there are
900 employees in that company, assuming normality of the monthly income, the
determine the following:

a. The number of employees receiving a monthly income of ₱5, 500.00 and above.
b. The number of employees earning a monthly income between ₱5, 000 to ₱7, 000

3. In a certain college, the mean NCEE score of the students was computed to be equal
to 75 with a standard deviation of 7.75. Records showed that 20% of the students with
an NCEE rating of 96 and above graduated with honors. However, 30% of the students
with an NCEE rating below 65 were dropped from the school due to poor academic
performance.
Each year, a total of 2,900 freshmen enrolled in that college. Assuming normality of the
data, then based on NCEE score alone, determine the following:

a. How many of the new freshmen are expected to graduate with honors?
b. How many of the new freshmen are expected to be dropped from the school due to
poor academic performance>
