By reimagining the ancient craft of ply split braiding through

a contemporary lens, this concept keeps the originality and
concept of the belt intact.
My concept focused on making a sling bag. All elements of
the bag will be braided, keeping in mind the core
functionality of the bag, its durability and strength. By
braiding together multiple strands of sturdy cordage, the bag
achieves a robust structure capable of withstanding the
rigours of daily use.
The chosen color palette, ranging from candy pink to fern
green adds a refreshing and contemporary touch to the
traditional craft.
These hues evoke a sense of energy while complementing the
natural tones of the braided cordage, creating a visual
contrast.
As a wearable work of art, the bag transcends its utilitarian
purpose to become a symbol of cultural continuity, artisanal
craftsmanship, and conscious consumption, inviting wearers
on a journey of exploration and connection with the rich
tapestry of heritage woven into its very fibers.

Exploring the fusion of ply split braiding with 3D

mathematical surfaces, this project aims to transform
geometric concepts into functional art. Beginning with a
Möbius strip, progressing through helicoids, and culminating
in hyperbolic surfaces, the focus is on creating curves, twists,
and turns that has volume and dynamism. The final outcome of
this project is a lamp that feature organic curves, intricate
twists, and a play of light and shadow through ply split
braiding.Through the exploration of 3D mathematical
surfaces in ply split braiding, I aim to redefine the possibilities
of this ancient craft.
ENCLAVE
Project by Shruti Pawar

Exploration into the three-dimensional potential of ply split

braiding. This project focuses on crafting a simple organic
shape reminiscent of petals, utilizing the technique's inherent
rigidity to manipulate form through cord addition and
subtraction. The goal is to experiment with repeating units
and arrangement, appreciating the simplicity while
envisioning diverse applications.
Material exploration intended to combine translucency and
opacity to play with light, as well as intentionally sequencing
cords to create patterns and stripes. Through this exploration,
the project seeks to place this technique in a contemporary
setting, offering a unique perspective on form, structure, and
materiality.
BLOOM
Project by Saambhavi Subramani

The travel of ideas and techniques across borders and

cultures mimics the way seeds travel to new lands through
birds and bees, flowering and spreading beauty in new
terrains. Flora, like craft, adapts to new contexts and grows.
It evolves to suit the region and sustain itself.
Revisiting traditional expectations of utility, I chose to create
flora through plysplit braiding, as it symbolizes the flourishing
of color and life through craft. The forms display the structure
and strength of the plysplit technique.

Creation for the sake of creating honours the materials used

and time spent honing a skill.
BRAIDED FUNGI
Project by Hrishabh Sonu

The idea was to create and explore structures inspired by

mushrooms, focusing on curvatures, layers, and other natural
elements. The final concept draws inspiration from
adornment, emphasizing color repetition, and more.
I aim to delve into the details of mushrooms, capturing their
essence through Ply-split brading. This exploration involves
not only mimicking their shapes but also infusing creativity
and aesthetics.Through this project, we aim to explore the
ply-split braiding as technique and its possiblities.

Project by Ananya Sharma

Through this project, I aimed to widen accessibility to the

technique of ply-split braiding, through relatable products
such as earrings.
The constant amplification of mass-production does not seem
to hold us back from appreciating and celebrating handmade
creations. These earrings are an attempt at seeking a way to
expand stakeholders; with respect to the opportunity to own
functional and potentially economical craft pieces.
The chosen forms and colours draw inspiration right from
chindi doris used around the dhaani, to the experience of
relaxing under the rustling neem tree.
in fading
Project by Samyuktha Rajagopal

A reflection of time; time to learn, to make and time as an

end. The ‘unth ka tang’ which refers to camel girth or camel
belt as we know it, is fading away with time. There are many
variables to it from the changes in the law to growth and
change in these environments.

‘in fading’ reflects on the decline of the practice of making

‘unth ka tang’. Subconsioulsy serving as a reflection of my
own time in this environment coming to a close. I see the
'tang' unraveling, until all we have left is the yarn.
Through The Window
Project by Kanishka Rawat

My project, "Through the Window," offers a glimpse into the

interesting world of ply split braiding. I meticulously crafted a
small replica window, dividing it into six panels to showcase
the beauty of ply split twining. Each panel features a unique
variation of twists, allowing viewers to observe the subtle
differences in technique. By experimenting with cords of
different thicknesses, I explored the scalability and texture of
the braids, resulting in a mesmerizing wall or window hanging
piece. I also deliberately incorporated ply split twining to
create captivating perforations on the surface, which
beautifully interact with light and shadow against the
backdrop of the window.
SANDSCAPE: journey in footprints
Project by Gauri Srivastava

The motive of my design project is to immerse oneself in a

realm of sensory wonder and introspection within a sand
dune. With each footstep sinking into the yielding grains of
sand, there emerges a sensation of the sand molding itself to
the contours of one’s feet. The rhythmic crunch beneath one's
feet forms a melody that harmonizes with the silence of the
vast desert. And underlying all of this are the delicate
patterns that have traced the passage of time.
SHIFTING
Project by Dhwanit Nagar

Imagine a craft tradition as vast and ever-changing as a

desert landscape. This piece explores the dynamic nature of
ply split braiding, its ability to shift between fluidity and
structure, just like the wind-sculpted dunes of Barmer. The
technique of POT (plain oblique twinning) along with SCOT
(single course oblique twinning) becomes my sculpting tool.
Aim was to create a form that flows and morphs, with some
soft, curving edges. This interplay between the flowing and
the rigid reflects the constant evolution of craft practices. My
inspiration comes from the desert itself. The majestic dunes,
forever reshaped by the wind, become a metaphor for the
ever-changing nature of craft. Just as the desert adapts, so
too must craft traditions evolve to remain vibrant and
relevant.

D.I.Y (Do it yourself)
Project by Amruta Pawaskar and
Ananya Mehandale

Ply-split braiding has been a leisure time activity, during

interactions with the practitioners terms like habit, medicine
and therapy came up which made me focus towards the
process of the technique instead of the outcome. The process
is tactile, there’s hand-eye coordination which is happening,
a interesting play of colors which made it a good craft
activity for kids. I feel it is essential that there be a platform
or any other way people are able to learn the craft without
the guidance of an expert, which is something that can help
it reach more peoples. Workshops were held at NID and
Riverside school wherein different modes of teaching were
tested out. Taking from the students response to the
workshops I have implemented the insights into a kit which
will help kids learn this craft independently.
