INTRODUCTION TO
STORM WATER
DRAINAGE SYSTEM
Storm Water Drainage System
STORM WATER DRAINAGE SYSTEM

It is a network of
structures, channels and
underground pipes that carry
stormwater to ponds, lakes,
streams and rivers.
Storm Water Drainage
System
It is not part of the wastewater system,
which carries water and waste from
drains and toilets to a treatment plant to
be treated and filtered.
Importance of swds

To Control The Quantity, Quality, Timing And

Distribution Of Storm Runoff

to provide adequate surface drainage

to help prevent flooding and erosion, that may

cause danger and accidents.
Storm Water Storm Drain

is part of the natural receives runoff from inlets to

Types of Storm Sewers

• Private Storm Sewers

• Combined Community Sewers
• Separate Community Storm
Sewers
Private Storm Sewer
Combined Community Sewer
In some cities,, storm sewers from the city
streets and the private buildings, driveways, and
parking areas all run into the sanitary sewer line.

Types of storm drainage system
Roof Drain System
A roof drain system consists of roof drains at
regular intervals on the roof surface that collect
storm water, transport it through pipes, and
discharge it at ground level or into a storm sewer.
Gutter and Downspout System
Storm water may be directed off the roof into gutters. A gutter is a
horizontal trough or channel that runs along the eaves of a
building to capture and divert rainwater or snowmelt from the roof
and allow it to drain into a downspout or leader
.
Surface Drainage
A catch basin is an underground structure, usually at the curb line, with an
open grate cover to collect storm water from streets and pathways and
discharge it to a storm sewer system.
A swale is a depression or ditch designed to move storm water away from
the building.
A detention pond is a human-made or natural pool or basin area used to
detain and control flow of storm water runoff during heavy rainstorms.
A retention pond is a human-made or natural pool or basin area used for
permanent storage of storm water runoff.

Stormwater drainage systems Subsurface drainage
Subsurface drainage is the removal of water from the rootzone.
It is accomplished by deep open drains or buried pipe drains.

Sump and Sump Pump

A pit or reservoir called a
sump can be located in the
basement or crawl space
floor. It is used for
collecting water that is
discharged by a sump
pump.
