PORTUGAL HISTORY

Portugal's history is as rich and diverse as its landscapes. Let's take a journey through time:

Early History: Portugal's roots trace back to ancient times, inhabited by Celtic tribes before being
colonized by the Romans. After the fall of Rome, it was conquered by various Germanic tribes before
Muslim Moors invaded in the 8th century.

The Reconquista: In the 12th century, Christian knights began the Reconquista, a centuries-long effort to
push the Moors out of the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal emerged as an independent kingdom in 1139
under King Afonso I.

The Age of Exploration: Portugal's golden age began in the 15th century with the Age of Exploration.
Prince Henry the Navigator spearheaded voyages that led to discoveries like Madeira, Azores, and the
sea route to India by Vasco da Gama.

Colonial Empire: Portugal established a vast global empire, including territories in Africa, Asia, and South
America. Brazil became the jewel of the crown, serving as the center of its colonial holdings.

Decline and Modernization: The empire declined in the 17th and 18th centuries due to wars, economic
crises, and competition with other European powers. In 1910, Portugal became a republic, ending the
monarchy.

20th Century: Portugal endured political instability, dictatorship under António de Oliveira Salazar, and
colonial wars in Africa. The Carnation Revolution in 1974 brought democracy, ending nearly five decades
of authoritarian rule.

Modern Portugal: Today, Portugal is a vibrant democracy and member of the European Union. It's
known for its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and welcoming people.

From its humble beginnings to its global influence, Portugal's history is a testament to resilience,
exploration, and the spirit of discovery.
