V. READING
A. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of
the questions.
MANAGING TIME
Time management: two words that have me breaking out in a cold sweat. Why should I suddenly have to
learn how to manage my time? Surely time had got on perfectly well for several millennia without requiring
management, let alone by me. But my university tutor was adamant: time needed some managing and
apparently it was up to me to do it.
First of all, let's be clear. I do have plenty of time to manage. As an arts student, I generally have 23
hours in the day that aren't given over to going to lectures. But I generally need somebody to tell me what I
should be writing, so I go to lectures.
Perhaps I had "taken on too much"? I'd been elected to four committees, produced a play, applied for a
part time job, hung around the college bar with my friends, and written the odd essay. But I thought I was
coping well. Sure, there was the day when I did the research for an essay on the morning of deadline day and
wrote it that afternoon, but that was a one off.
On second thoughts, maybe my tutor is right. It's difficult to give up what you're involved in but perhaps
it's a good idea to sit back and have a breather once in a while. Even an arts student has to get down to some
real work!
1. What was the writer's initial reaction to his tutor's ultimatum?
A. He had to admit that it was sound advice.
B. He failed to see how it could help him.
C. He had no understanding of what it meant.
D. He had tried it before so he knew it would fail.
2. What is the writer's job?
A. He's a time manager. B. He's a lecturer. C. He's an arts student. D. He's a university tutor.
3. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as something he had done?
A. Producing a play B. Getting a part time job
C. Writing an essay D. Head of four committees
4. The writer slowly begins to realize that he should ____.
A. spend more time with his friends B. end his obsession with leisure pursuit
C. integrate more into university life D. apply himself to the real task in hand
5. The word "breather" in the passage mostly means ____.
A. an assignment B. a machine C. a rest D. a passion

B. Read the text and do the tasks below.

Many young people strive to be independent. That means you are able to take care of yourself, and you
don't have to rely on anyone else. However, to live independently, you need a number of life skills in order not
to depend on your parents and older brothers or sisters. One of the most important skills is time management
which can help you build your confidence and self-esteem. With good time management skills, you can perform
your daily tasks, including your responsibilities at school and at home with pleasing results. Moreover, you will
not feel stressed when exam dates are approaching. These skills can also help you act more independently and
responsibly, get better grades at school and have more time for your family and friends.
Developing time-management skills is not as challenging as you may think. Firstly, make a plan for
things you need to do, including appointments and deadlines. Using a diary or apps on mobile devices will
remind you of what you need to accomplish and when you need to accomplish it. Secondly, prioritize your
activities. You need to decide which tasks are the most urgent and important and then, concentrate on these first.
This way, you may not be at a loss to deal with too much work at the same time. Thirdly, develop routines
because routines, when established, take less time for you to do your tasks.
Time management skills are not hard to develop; once you master them, you will find out that they are
great keys to success and you can become independent.
1. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Young people need a lot of life skills to be independent.
B. Teenagers can have more confidence and self-esteem if they have good time-management skills.
C. Mastering time-management skills can bring many benefits and there are three steps to develop them.
2. Which of the following is not mentioned as benefits of good time-management?
A. Be more confident and self-esteemed.
B. Complete the daily tasks with the best result.
C. Get better grades at school and have more time for other activities.
3. How can you prioritize your activities?
A. Make schedule for things you need to do.
B. Concentrate on the most urgent and important tasks first.
C. Try to establish routines.
4. What does the word accomplish mean?
A. Complete B. Involve C. Duty
5. What is the author's viewpoint on developing time-management skills?
A. It's hard but you can master it well.
B. It's very challenging to build.
C. It's easier to master than people think.

C. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
The next time you're out in a public place, like a park or a restaurant, look around you. What is happening?
Some people are surfing the internet on their phones. Others are wearing headphones, listening to music on
their MP3 players. That's just the way life is today. We all spend a fair amount of our time connected to
technology.
Now imagine living in a world without smartphones, tablets or any of the electronic gadgets we take for
granted these days. There's no internet and you go to the library and look at a book when you want to find
anything out. You play outside with friends in the real world instead of playing online video games in virtual
worlds. There are no texts, no DVDs and no email. Welcome to 1986!
That's the world the McMillan family from Ontario, Canada, decided to live in for a year. Blair, 27, Morgan,
28, and their two sons Trey and Denton, aged five and three, got rid of their cable TV, smartphones, internet,
new games console, digital camera, DVD player and sat nav, and instead used an old TV, a radio, old
telephones, a VHS video player, an old games console and maps. They decided to try it after seeing how their
young children were becoming dependent on technology. They aren't alone. More and more parents today
worry about the effect technology is having on their children, particularly very young children.
The McMillans decided to get back to basics to see how things have changed. So how did they find their year
without modem technology? ‘I thought Blair was mad when he suggested doing this whole thing,’ says
Morgan, but it's made me realise how much time we wasted. We seem much more relaxed now, not checking
in on email or Facebook all the time.’ The McMillans are now back in the present with a different attitude to
today's technology. Blair said, ‘I'm not anti-technology. I wanted to taste, and I wanted my kids to taste what it
would be like without it, and to see if we could actually do it.”
