MARANAOS

Maranao- largest of the Muslim cultural-


linguistic groups of the Philippines

The Maranaos of the Southern Pilippines are


known for their famous sarimanok designs,
pako rabong, and panulong.
SARIMANOK
- is the stylized
design of a
mythical bird
holding a fish in
its beak or
standing on a
base with a
shape of a fish
SARIMANOK
- came from the words “sari” (a
garment of different colors
deeply related to their culture)
and “manok” (rooster with its
beautiful and colorful feathers
- represents good fortune and
prosperity
Pako Rabong
- a beautiful design of a growing fern
The sarimanok is found in panulong which
is the extended floor beam of the large
sultan’s house
Kulintang music- unifier of the
Maguindanao’s community. They use this
instrument to solidify family ties.
Gandingan (talking gongs)- are used as
means of communication from distant areas
before the invention of the telephone.
The Tagbanuas of Palawan are good carvers
of wooden figures of various kinds of animals
and birds.
Other decorations and sculptures of saints have
originated in Paete, Laguna. On the other hand,
Betis, Pampanga is a place known for its
decorative furniture.
