HUMAN THREATS

OF SEA TURTLES
are they endangered?
major threats on sea turtles.
what we should do?
Worldwide, six of the seven sea turtle species are
classified as threatened or endangered due to human
actions and lifestyles.
MAJOR THREATS ON
SEA TURTLES:
1- Vessel Collisions: Increased boat traffic results in a greater number of strandings.
2- Beachfront Lighting: Distracts nesting mothers and disorients hatchlings often
resulting in the death.
3- Seawalls: Prevent female turtles from nesting on their natal beach.

4- Fisheries: Sea turtles virtually everywhere are affected by fisheries, especially

longlines, gill nets, and trawls.
5- Pollution: Plastics, discarded fishing gear, petroleum by-products, and other
debris harm and kill sea turtles through ingestion and entanglement.
WHAT SHOULD WE DO TO
PROTECT SEA TURTLES?
SOME SUGGESTİONS:
1- For Vessel Collisions: Keep a lookout for marine life when travelling in areas that
are known to support sea turtles.

2- For Beachfront Lighting: Use amber light and install lighting fixtures that do not
shine on the beach.
3- For Seawalls: Use natural methods to prevent shoreline erosion.

4- For Fisheries: Sea vessels are not allowed to enter the areas where sea turtles
roam and where they lay eggs.
5- For Pollution: Regular cleaning of beaches and the sea.
