During my fifteenth week interning at East Georgia Healthcare Center, I worked on

finishing up my internship project focusing on increasing colorectal cancer screening rates in our

office. I recognized a shortage of colorectal cancer Hemosure screening kits, so I took the

initiative to put together more. I also created goody bags filled with educational materials on

colorectal cancer screening to send home with our patients. On Monday, I had the opportunity to

meet with the head of the colorectal cancer department at East Georgia Healthcare Center. They

visited our office to give the providers an update on Metter's colorectal cancer screening rates.

They also informed our office that to encourage productivity, all East Georgia Health Center

locations are in a competition this year for the highest individual provider screening rate and the

most improved individual provider screening rate. The winners of the competition will have a

lunch provided to them as a reward for their dedication. Throughout the week, I efficiently

managed office errands and ensured paperwork was completed. As a highlight, we celebrated

one of our patient representatives' upcoming wedding. I was given the responsibility of

organizing both the celebratory lunch and her gift basket from the office staff.

Lessons Learned

This week and throughout my internship, I have noticed patients bringing gifts to show

appreciation for their providers and the entire office. This action might seem small, but it

highlights the importance of building strong relationships and delivering outstanding care. When

patients take the time to express their gratitude, it reminds the providers that going above and

beyond in patient care can provide a sense of trust between the healthcare provider and patient.
Making patients feel valued and cared for is crucial for providing the best treatment possible.

This team really goes above and beyond, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to work with

them. The past fifteen weeks of my internship have gone by so quickly, and while I'll be sad to

leave my internship site, I know I have gained valuable skills that will set me up for success after

graduation.
