PCA-Structural Frame Worksheet


Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the structural frame
2. Apply the structural frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

My company is a bank, property and casualty and life insurance company. I am a Senior
Business Process Owner for the Enterprise. I also do various Project Management tasks.
Currently all of the respective companies send email, text and push notifications to our
members. Each of the companies uses their own schedule and messaging templates. Over
the past several years, messaging has gotten out of hand. My team is tasked with creating
a solution to govern and deliver consistent and pertanant messaging across the enterprise.

2) Describe how the structure of the organization influenced the situation.

The organizational structure at my company has created this situation. Each company in
our enterprise operates with it’s own agenda. Each company feels their messages are the
most important and because there is no oversight they have no knowledge nor do they
care what the other companies are sending out. This creates a very bad experience for the
members who are bombarded with messaging. They think we are all one company so do
not understand why we message separately.

3) Recommend how you would use structure for an alternative course of action
regarding your case.

The solution to the structuring problem at my company would be that everyone reports
into the same president who has a vested interest in all of the companies succeeding. We
have worked in silos for so long that no one gives a thought about the goals of the other
company. Currently there is a president for each company and then vice presidents,
US directors, leads, seniors and team members.
AA I feel the key to an alternative course of action would be one president. This one

intertwined and dependant on working all together as one intity. This would alleviate the

single minded thinking and create effectibe collaboration with a common goal in mind.
Currently even the bonueses are set up in a structured silo so each company is highly
competitive with one another. If the bonus structure was that we all received one or no
one did than the mindset would change to helping instead of hindering.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

According to the text book, “Framing Organizations”and considering the Basic


Underwater Demolition (BUD/S) training, “The team gets punished for any individual
infractions.” (Bolman & Deal, 2021) I would structure the organization where each
company was dependant on the other. I would create the same goal for the entire
enterprise with dependencies on one another.
At the end of the day, the customer should be the number one focus. The customer should
see us as one seamless organization. This can only be accomplished if we are structured
with the same leadership in each of the companies. There must be a vested interest for
each of the companies to work together to achieve a common goal. As long as there is a
structure that creates competitiveness, we will never be one to the customer.
