SUMMARY OF THE TEXT

The states of matter include gas, liquid and solid, each with distinct observable
properties. A gas has no fixed volume or shape and expands to fill its
container. Liquids have a defined volume, but take on the shape of the
container. Solids have a defined shape and volume and are not very
compressible. The properties of states can be understood at a molecular level.
In gases, the molecules are far apart and moving quickly. In liquids, the
molecules are close together and move quickly, allowing sliding. In solids, the
molecules are tightly bound together, with minimal movement. Changes in
temperature and/or pressure can lead to conversion between states, such as
the melting of ice or the condensation of water vapor.
