Projectile Motion

I. Understanding Projectile Motion

A. Directions: Identify the term/phrase being described in each of the statements
below. Refer to the given diagram. Choose your answer from the box then write it on
the space provided before each number.
RANGE TRAJECTORY HORIZONTAL VELOCITY
HEIGHT VERTICAL VELOCITY PROJECTILE MOTION

Figure 1. Projectile Motion

___________1. The combination of vertical and horizontal motion which is acted

by gravity only.
___________2. The curved path taken by the projectile object.
___________3. The vertical distance the projectile can reach.
___________4. The horizontal distance along the ground.
___________5. The component of velocity in projectile motion that is constant.
___________6. The component of velocity that decreases as the projectile moves
upward and increases as it moves downward.
B. Directions. Analyze the given situation below
and answer the following questions.

Consider two identical coins (Coin A and Coin B)

at the corner of the table released
simultaneously from the same height as shown
in Figure 2.
Question:
1. Which of the two coins reached the
floor first? Explain.

Coin A Coin B

Figure 2. Coins in freefall and

projectile motion

Specific Week: 1 (LAS 1)

Target Competency: Describe the horizontal and vertical motion of a projectile.

C. Direction. Put a check (✓) in the given table if the description is involved in the
given motion.

II. The Horizontal and Vertical Components

of Projectile Motions
A. Directions: Draw vector arrows
representing the vx and vy (velocity
components) during the motion. The
length of the arrows must represent the
magnitude of the velocity components.

Figure 3. Components of Projectile Motion

Answer the following:
1. Describe the path taken by the projectile.

2. Is projectile motion one dimensional? Explain.

3. What force/s is/are acting on the projectile?

4. Compare the horizontal and vertical motion of the projectile.

B. Problem Solving:
Directions: Solve the following problems. Show your solutions.
1. A ball is thrown horizontally with a speed of 2.50 m/s from a height of 50.0
meters.

a. How long will the ball travel before it reaches the ground?

b. Find the range of the projectile.

2. An object is thrown horizontally from the top of the building with an initial velocity
of 15.0 m/s. Find the height of the building if the object hits the ground 60.0 m away
from the building

Specific Week: 1 (LAS 1)

Target Competency: Describe the horizontal and vertical motion of a projectile.

III. Projectile at an Angle

Directions: Draw vector arrows representing the vx and vy (velocity components)
during the motion. The length of the arrows must represent the magnitude of the
velocity components.

Figure 4. Projectile thrown at an angle θ

Answer the following:

1. Consider the arrows you drew for the upward motion of the ball. Explain
why you drew these arrows that way.

2. Consider the arrows you drew for the downward motion of the ball.
Explain why you drew these arrows that way.

3. What can you say about the vx and vy when the ball is at its maximum
height?

Problem Solving:
Directions. Solve the given problem below. Show your complete solutions.

A ball is being thrown at an initial velocity of 30.0 m/s and makes an

angle of 30.0o with the ground. Find:

a. the total time the ball is travelling

b. the maximum height

c. the horizontal distance

Specific Week: 2 (LAS 1)

Target Competency: Investigate the relationship between the angle of release
and the height and range of the projectile (S9FE-Iva-35)

IV. Projectile Motion and Complementary Angles

Directions: Study Figure 5 and answer the questions that follow.

Figure 5. Ranges of projectiles launched at different angles with the same speed.

Questions:
1. At what angle will the projectile have the same range when thrown at an angle
of 15o? 300?

2. What launch angle will have the same range as a projectile launched at 20 o?

3. In the absence of air resistance, at what angle should the projectile be

launched to get the maximum range?

4. In a sport like Javelin throw, at what angle should you launch the spear to
reach the farthest distance?

Specific Week: 2 (LAS 1)

Target Competency: Investigate the relationship between the angle of release
and the height and range of the projectile (S9FE-Iva-35)
