2022 ASSIGNMENT MARKING SCHEME

MARKING RUBRICS

This one assignment must be handed in a ‘report’ format.

The marking rubrics tries to enforce the ‘report’ format, by giving marks to specific elements of a
report, as set out below. It is essential that the student makes absolutely sure that he or she
understand the required format and the marks allocated for that particular element.
In allocating the marks for an Assignment (report), the following marking protocol will be
followed for the Assignment (report):

1. Bibliography 10 marks
2. Referencing 20 marks
3. Structure 5 marks
4. Presentation 5 marks
5. Technical Content 60 marks.
Total for document 100 marks
Where:

1. Bibliography represents the publications (information) the student has sourced, read and
used in the Assignment (report). Usually such publications consulted will be presented
as a list at the end of the report – note the correct format (see Referencing). When
assessing your report under this section, it will be checked if the report has such a list, is
it correctly presented, is it relevant (or simply a list copied from somewhere), and was it
indeed used in the Assignment.
2. Referencing should be done according to the VUT Referencing Guidelines (which
students can source from the internet). When assessing the report under this section,
the report body (text) will be checked if any of the content is referenced to the
bibliography provided and in the correct style. Also it will be accepted if use the
‘Windows Word’ facility for ‘referencing’ 1 is applied. It is important that the student
familiarise themselves with ‘plagiarism’ and understand that credit to work / ideas of
others must be given.
3. Structure: It is expected for instance that each report will have a front or cover page that
provides information about the topic (e.g. Assignment 6: Grazing Habits of Wild Hogs),
the subject particulars, student name, student number, date, etc.) It is expected that
there should be an Index or Content Page with page numbers). The document’s pages
are numbered, structured in numbered paragraphs and or chapters, and that the
document has a logical ‘flow’, etc. Again students should do a quick research on the
topic of the ‘structure’ or ‘format’ of documents / reports.
4. Presentation, is simply an assessment of how the document ‘look’, the impression it
gives if you simply look at it and page through it - is it a report / document that ‘grab’
your attention and compel you to read it, or does it give the impression that you rather
will look at it later or preferably not. Please take note ‘reports’ are the major
communication instrument to communicate with your client, your management,
sometimes the community, and provides a permanent record of everything. Again,
spend a few minutes to ‘research’ this topic.
5. Technical Content – that is where you demonstrate the knowledge you have learned and
gained, and is obviously the main purpose of the exercise / assignment.

1
Go to RERENCES on the Menu Bar, click on “Insert Footnote” and MSWord will automatically ‘reference’ it – as
was done in this case. And at the end of the page, you can type in the reference.
Despite the marking rubrics, and the technical content required, it is acknowledge that report
writing an important communication and therefor management tool, and is in essence a basic
requirement – skill required from a Technologist.
RUBRICS

The project will be marked, using the following rubrics:

NOTE:

1. EACH ASSIGNMENT ON ITS OWN WILL BE ASSESSED AS ABOVE.

2. EACH ASSIGNMENT ON ITS OWN MUST BE ‘PASSED’ – SCORE A MINIMUM
OF 50%. THIS ASSIGNMENT IS WEIGHTED AT 10% OF THE CASS MARKS
ALLOCATION.
3. TAKE NOTE OF THE MARKING RUBRICS (AWARD OF MARKS) AND USE IT AS A
‘CHECKLIST’ TO STRUCTURE ON HOW TO COMPILE YOUR REPORT.
4. ALL ASSESSMENTS CONTENT WILL BE CHECKED FOR ‘COPYING’ USING SUCH
FACILITES THE UNIVERSITY PROVIDES, e.g. TURNITIN, etc.
5. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
