CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This method and procedure on how the students were conducted are
discussed in this chapter. It represents the description of the research design,
respondents of the study, research environment, instrumentation, data
gathering procedure and statistical statement.

Research Design

This study used descriptive design. Michael Berkwits defines descriptive

to try and determine the characteristics of a population or phenomenon. In the
context of nursing was appropriate when currents practice seems not to be
sufficient, or when the researcher identified areas of concern that need to be
investigated. It respects the current study; descriptive design was used to
determine the Level of Awareness in Contraception among Nursing Students in
ADFC A.Y. 2023-2024.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study are 1st-4th year students of Bachelor of

Science in Nursing in Asian Development Foundation College. Two hundred
five (205) students will be chosen to participate in this study as respondents.
The respondents will be assured that confidentiality will be upheld throughout
the course of the survey.

Research Instrument

The research instrument used in this study is self-structured survey

questionnaires for the respondents which consist of two (2) parts. The first
part will be the demographic profile of the students such as age, address,
gender, religion, civil status, year level, and socio-economic status. The second
part, which consists of (2) parts, will be the questionnaires that measure the
level of awareness of the respondents in contraception, that consist of a total of
twelve (12) questions. The questions will be answered by marking a check ()
on the choices, YES or NO in part II.A then choices Very High Awareness, High
Awareness, Middle Awareness, Low Awareness, Very Low Awareness in the part
II.B. Filling out personal information of the respondents in the survey
questionnaires will be required, but filling out the respondent's name will be
optional.

Data Collection Procedure

First step, we asked Dr. Edward Y. Chua and the administration and
staff of the Nursing Department permission to conduct this survey of all levels
of nursing students at ADFC A.Y. 2023-2024. This Research project was
compiled from various published articles, literature, and journals we found on
the internet and books. Through this research we gained the data collection
procedures we used in our surveys. We also used these procedures to compile
and rate the answers of the student's survey questionnaire.

Statistical Treatment of Data

This part of the research identified the kind of data produced by the
study and presents the testing of hypothesis. The Purposive Sampling Method
would be used to determine the hypothesis presented in the study. The
statistical treatment should be appropriate to the data produced by the study.
This section also presented representative samples collected by the researchers
subjectively.

In getting the sample size, the researchers used:

The Slovin’s Formula: n = N/1 + Ne²

Where: n = Sample size

N = Population size
1 = is the constant value
e = margin of error
Computation:

ADFC campus, P. Burgos St. Students Population:

(NOTE) Nursing students: 420

n = N/1 + Ne²

n = 420/1 + (420 x 0.05²)

n = 420/1 + (420 x 0.0025)

n = 420/1 + 1.05

n = 420/2.05

n = 204. 8

PART I-Frequency Counts and Percentage

To determine the answer to a problem which concerns the demographic

profile of the respondents, the frequency, and the percentage was used.

PART II-Weighted Mean

To determine the level of awareness of contraception among ADFC

nursing students.

In getting the Weighted Mean, the researchers used:

The formula: x=
∑ (w x)
∑w
Where: x=¿ Weighted Mean

∑ ¿ Sum of the number of similar terms

w=¿ Corresponding weight for each observation

x=¿ Mean value of the set of given data

Likert five-point scale

A Likert five-point scale with the following interpretation was provided to

guide the respondents as follows:

Score Interpretation
4.20 to 5.00 Very High Awareness
3.01 to 4.19 High Awareness
2.01 to 3.00 Middle Awareness
1.01 to 2.00 Low Awareness
0.01 to 1.00 Very Low Awareness

PART III- Chi Square

The chi-square test of independence was used as a statistical tool in

analyzing the relationship of variables in the study. The test was applied since
there were categorical variables from a single population. It was used to
determine whether there is a significant association between the demographic
profile of the respondents and the level of awareness in contraception among
Bachelor of Science in Nursing students of ADFC for academic year 2023-2024.

The value of x² was to compute the p value at .05 level of significance

which means that if the p value is more than .05, the null hypothesis is
accepted but if is less than .05 there was sufficient evidence the null
hypothesis is rejected.

Manipulations

In getting the frequency, percentage, and mean:

Step 1: Click "analysis" hover over "descriptive statistics" then click
"frequencies"

Step 2: Click our chosen variables then click the "transfer button"

Step 3: Click "statistics" and then click the boxes "quartiles" "mean" "median"
"mode" and standard deviation. Click "continue" select "none" as the chart type
the second window.

In getting the chi-square:

Step 1: Click "analysis" hover over "descriptive statistics" then click *crosstabs"

Step 2: For the rows, we selected ours "independent variables" then click "the
transfer button"

Step 3: Click "statistics" and then check the boxes "chi-square" then click
"continue" select "cell" just below the "statistics" then check the boxes
"observed" "row" "column" and "round cell count then click "continue" then
click "ok" button to generate the output.
