PHYSICS 158 HW-8b – due Monday, Mar 18th at 11:59pm

You should upload your work to Gradescope using the link on the CANVAS website. Please indicate the page # on
which you start each problem. Use a printer/scanner or a scanning app on your phone to reduce the file size. Make sure
that it is readable so that it can be graded. Label your file with your ActID# -- Last Name. Also please write your
ActID# -- Last Name along with your Tutorial #, Date at the top of each page. Use the physical or numerical
constants from your book unless the value is given in the problem. Please circle all your answers.

The written HW is designed to help you develop your problem solving and presentation skills. You must include a
diagram or sketch ( for every problem ). You do not need to write out all the words for the problem -- you should use
your diagram to define your variables. You must include a brief statement indicating what the problem has asked you
to calculate. You can copy and paste the statement of the problem into your work, if you like. Your TA will grade two
problems in detail ( 5 points each ). The other problems will be given either 0 or 1 point ( for a good effort ). You
could lose 1 point overall if your submission is NOT neat.

1. ( Difficulty: ** ) Two uniformly charged spheres ( Q1 = 100 nC, R1 = 30 cm, Q2 = 25 nC, R2 = 5cm ) are placed on a
line drawn through their centres. Their centres are 1 m apart, as shown in the diagram below.
(a) Calculate the potential at the points a and b on their surfaces as shown. Hint – use superposition.
(b) Calculate the potential at the centre of the large sphere.

2. ( Difficulty: * ) A resistor ( R2 = 2 ) and a capacitor ( C2 = 16) are connected in parallel to a 10 V battery with
another resistor ( R1 = 1 Ω ) as shown.

(b) At this time, t = t1 a dielectric with 𝜅 = 4 is inserted into the capacitor. What is the new current flowing through R2
(a) What is the current flowing through R2 after a long time ( t = t1 ) ??

at the instant just after the dielectric is inserted ( at )?

3. ( Difficulty: **
diagram: (a negative oxygen atom (blue) with two positive hydrogen atoms (red) attached to it). Assume 𝑉 (∞) = 0
) A very rough approximation for a water molecule can be represented by the following

a) What is the total electrical energy stored in this molecule in terms of charge 𝑞 and distance 𝑎 ??
b) Interpret the sign of your answer to part (a).
c) Assuming all the charges are fixed in place, if you bring a positive test charge from infinity to the point A, how
much external work would be required ?? (Simplify your answer as much as possible)
d) What would be the new total energy stored in the system after bringing the charge to the point A ??
e) Note that in a real water molecule, the angle between the hydrogen atoms is 104.5 as shown below. How would this
affect your answer to part (c) ??
(
4. Difficulty: ** ) Consider an air capacitor with two flat plates of area A separated by a distance d. A metal slab of
the same area with thickness a < d is inserted between the plates as shown.
(a) Calculate the capacitance of this system in terms of the capacitance of the original parallel plate capacitor.
(b) Discuss what happens when a à 0 and aà d.

(
5. Difficulty: * ) A long wire with a current of 4.50 A makes two 90 bends as shown. It passes through a uniform
magnetic field B = 0.24 Tesla confined to a limited region of space.
(a) Calculate the Magnetic Force exerted on the wire.
(b) Will the wire rotate or translate ??

6. ( Difficulty: *** ) A thin-walled hollow conducting cylinder of radius rb is concentric with a sold conducting
cylinder of radius ra < rb. Both cylinders have length L. A battery maintains a potential V between the two cylinders. A
dielectric cylinder of inner radius ra and outer radius R < rb can slide between the conducting cylinders.
(a) Calculate the Capacitance C(x) of the system where x = the length of the dielectric inside the conducting cylinders.
(b) Using the values L = 10.0 cm, ra = 1.0 cm, rb = 4.0 cm, R = 3.0 cm, and compute C(0) and C(L).
(c) If V = 0.50 kV, what value of x will produce 6.0 nC of charge on the positive cylinder plate ??
NOTE – using 500 Volts and 6.0 nC à x = 11.4 cms which outside the stated length of the capacitor ( L = 10cm ).
(I did not remember the correct book values when I wrote out the problem ). Don’t redo the problem.
HOWEVER – if you are just starting the problem use V = 1.0 kV and 6.0 nC which will give x = 4.12 cm.
