Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

In recent years, the integration of technology in education has become increasingly prevalent,
revolutionizing traditional teaching methods. One such technological innovation that has gained
immense popularity among the youth is TikTok. TikTok is a social media platform that allows users to
create and share short videos, ranging from dances and lip-syncing to educational content. Its engaging
and interactive nature has captured the interest of millions worldwide, making it a potential tool for
enhancing teaching and learning experiences, particularly in the field of English language teaching (ELT).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite its popularity and potential benefits, there is a lack of research on the effective integration of
TikTok in English language teaching. Educators are often unsure of how to utilize TikTok effectively in the
classroom, and there is a need for empirical studies to explore its impact on students' language learning
outcomes. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the implementation of TikTok in modern
ELT and exploring its potential in contemporary pedagogy.

1.3 Research Objectives

 To explore the features of TikTok that make it a potentially effective tool for English language
teaching.
 To investigate the impact of TikTok on students' motivation and engagement in learning English.
 To examine the challenges and limitations of integrating TikTok in ELT and identify strategies to
overcome them.
 To provide practical recommendations for educators on how to effectively integrate TikTok in
their English language teaching practices.
1.4 Definition of Key Terms
 TikTok: A social media platform that allows users to create and share short videos, often
characterized by music, dances, and lip-syncing.
 English Language Teaching (ELT): The practice of teaching English to non-native speakers, often
focusing on language skills such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
 Pedagogy: The theory and practice of teaching, including the methods and strategies used to
facilitate learning.
 Technology Integration: The incorporation of technology into teaching practices to enhance
learning outcomes and educational experiences.

1.5 Organization of the Study

This study is organized into five chapters. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research topic,
including background information, statement of the problem, research objectives, definition of key
terms, and organization of the study. Chapter 2 reviews the relevant literature on the integration of
technology in ELT and provides a theoretical framework for the study. Chapter 3 describes the research
methodology, including the research design, participants, data collection procedures, and data analysis
methods.
