Subject: Science
Term: 1
Focus Question : Why is it important to care for the environment?
Duration: 60 minutes x 4
Attainment Target(s) :
1. Recognize the variety of living things, their interdependence and the interrelationship with the
environment.
2. Demonstrate positive interpersonal skills in order to foster good working relationships.
Benchmarks: Be aware of some environmental problems (climate change, solid waste disposal, soil
degradation) and how to mitigate them.
ICT Attainment Target: Communication and collaboration: students use technology to communicate
ideas and information and work collaboratively to support individual needs and contribute to the learning
of others.
Prior learning: understand that there are interactions among living things and their environment.
Cross-curricular links:
Social studies
Mathematics
Language Arts
Content:
Soil is one of earth’s most precious resources. It provides the support and nourishment that plants need in
order to grow. There are six main types of soil: clay, sand, silt, peat, chalk and loam.
Sandy soil: is loose and easy to dig. Plants do not grow well in sandy soil because it has few nutrients, it
is light and water drains through it easily.

Silt: silt is a granular material between sand and clay.

. Loam/garden soil: is a mixture of clay, sand and humus. Many plants grow well in this soil. It holds
water and has many nutrients for plants.

Clay soil: is heavy and does not allow water to drain through it easily, it contains many nutrients which
allow plants to grow well.

Key skills: collaborate, manipulate, communicate, observe, think critically(analyze and join conclusions).
Key vocabulary: soil, loam, sand, clay, environment, beach
Materials and Resources: soil samples (sand, clay, loam), beaker, funnel, pictures/videos, water
Teaching and learning activities
Day 1
Topic: What is Soil/Types of Soil
Specific objectives: students should be able to:
1. Brainstorm and formulate a working definition for soil.
2. Identify the different types of soils
3. Identify the differences between sand, clay and loam soil.
Engage:
● Students will be invited to watch a video on soils from YouTube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMlz-Tbe0XY Starting at timestamp 0:54
● Teacher will pause the video or audio at different intervals to ask students questions about content
from video/audio.
Explore:
● Students will present the various soils that they collected from their different environments. They
will examine and describe the texture, colour and the size of the particles that make up each soil
sample. Each student will share where they collected their soil sample.

Explain:
● Students will compare their soil samples and share the similarities and differences using Venn
Diagrams through Jamboard.

Elaborate:
● Students will explore and view images depicting the different types of soil. Students will use the
characteristics of the different types of soil to determine which particular environment each soil
type belongs to.
Evaluate: Students will participate in a Kahoot game on types of soil.
https://create.kahoot.it/details/0e6902b8-0328-40bc-b2c9-d51ad4d2e40d

Extend:
● Tier 1: Students will research layers of Soil and share their findings on day 2. Students will use a
model to demonstrate the order in which the layer of soil is found. (Advance Group)
● Tier 2: Students will define the terms; topsoil, subsoil, and bedrock. Students will use a model to
demonstrate the order in which the layer of soil is found. (Average Group)
● Tier 3: Students will research and locate an image of the layers of soil that is labelled. (Below
Average Group)

Day 2
Topic: Investigating soil types

Specific objectives: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Investigate to determine how water reacts and or behave with the different types of soils.
2. Investigate and compare the soil with the highest water-holding capacity and the soil with the
lowest water- holding capacity
3. Identify the soil that is best used for farming.
Teaching and learning activities

Engage:
● Students will make their presentation from the previous day’s activity. (Tiers 1-3)
● Students will be asked to define the term water-holding capacity.
Explore:
● Students will be investigating the water-holding capacity of the following soil samples: clay, sand
and loam.
● Students will record in their notebooks/logbooks their results based on their observations and draw
at least three (3) conclusions.

Explain:
● Students will be invited to watch a YouTube video experiment on water holding capacity of
different soils https://youtu.be/GqcbX-bSI3E

Extend/Evaluate:
● Students will be placed in groups. Each group will be assigned a type of soil to research the use of
that particular type of soil. Students could use content from the website:

Udw20xbB0qHV_RR8nl in their research.
● Students will present their findings to the class in a creative way; song, poster, poem, etc.
