Baird, Daniel. “Introduction to Anime in US Pop Culture.” Literary Studies SLCC, Salt

Lake Community College, 21 Aug. 2023,

slcc.pressbooks.pub/literarystudiesatslcc/chapter/introduction-to-anime/.

Summary: Daniel Baird’s “Introduction to Anime in US Pop Culture” provides an

overview of the history of anime and its integration into the United States. In Baird’s

introduction, he states the economic achievements anime has reached in the US. He defines

anime throughout his reach as a form of animation originating in Japan, distinguished by its

diverse genres, artistic styles, and cultural significance. It began in the early 20th century

and gained popularity globally in the latter half of the century. Baird presents the history of

anime by stating that Astro Boy was the first anime to be imported into the US in 1963.

Baird also defines the various types of anime: Children’s, Shonen, Shojo, Seinen, and Josei.

Different genders and ages are designed to appeal to one of these specific genres.

I selected this work by Baird due to its relevance to how anime began to rise in popularity.

ddddHe talks a lot about how anime first started being implemented in the US and the economic

dddd achievements that have been reached. Baird does a fine job of staging the start-up of anime

dddd in the US, the different genres of anime, and presenting evidence that anime is so popular

dddd in the US.

Cartoon planet: the cross-cultural acceptance of Japanese animation

(tandfonline.com)
Summary: Japanese animation poses an important challenge to US dominance in the

global entertainment market. Through content/ratings analysis, survey research, and

interviews, this study identified two aspects of between-nation differences: Japan's

preferred anime is different from that of foreign viewers, and foreign viewers' preferences

are different. Asian anime's greater popularity than that of the West can be attributed to

regional considerations rather than cultural proximity. Despite the characters' apparent

Caucasian appearance, an industry that has always targeted a domestic market may be

saved by exporting to other countries. From this article I can use the quantitative and

qualitative studies they have produced to educate others on anime’s significance in the

world. I will be able with the help of this article explain why anime has become more

dominant in the US and in the global entertainment market.

Fennell, Dana, et al. “Consuming Anime.” Sage Journals, 2 Mar. 2012,

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1527476412436986

Summary: In “Consuming Anime” by Danna Fennell, she explores the cultural content,

race, and gender within anime, anime as soft power, fandom of anime, her methods of

analyzing Bleach and The Wallflower, her finding in race and ethnicity in anime, gender,

sex, and sexuality. Fennell discusses the two sides of views considering how anime

presents itself. First, anime now seems odorless and no longer embeds Japanese culture

within it. Second, anime still contains the principles of Japanese culture in the show. With

racial diversity, especially in Bleach, viewers believe that anime has become more

Westernized. The diversity of race and the various roles in the genders sway fans that the
Japanese culture is not as present. However, with the use of realistic and fantasy elements,

anime has multiple faces. It can represent Japanese culture, fantasy, and realism.

Dana Fennell’s research on “Consuming Anime” will help my research question because

of the controversy that is brought up. Controversy no matter what it is brings about two

sides that hash out their perspectives. Unlike “The Influence of Anime as Japanese Popular

Culture among Art and Design Students” and “Introduction to Anime in US Pop Culture”,

“Consuming Anime” discusses the gender and the sex roles of each anime and the

influence of other countries in the anime (Bleach).

video games, and internet media are big global favorites. People in Japan were fully

allowed to express their creativity, display their talents, and even get official backing.

Through their efforts, they also propagate their customs and culture. These explanations

explain why the animation business in Japan is still expanding despite the COVID-19

pandemic, and they also have an impact on other associated aspects like cosplay, figure,

book, novel, and other influences. Using this article will allow me to explain how even

through hard times in economics and even the world anime is able to thrive.

Summary: Yusof, Nor Afian, et al, go into great detail about what pop culture is, how anime

became a pop culture, what is anime, and why anime is appealing, as well as quantitative

research of how art and design students few anime both negatively and positively. As they define

what anime is they do so in a few different ways. Anime is often referred to as Western

animation that is different or a medium with beautiful aesthetics with intriguing plots. Overall

anime is an overview of Japanese culture and its beliefs. Positive and negative views arise from

just about any topic and anime is no different. The authors elaborate on how studies have shown

how influential anime is on teenagers' (mainly males) behaviors. Lastly, the authors present their

findings from their surveys of whether or not their classmates watch anime, how much they

watch, what makes them watch anime, and how few anime they watch. I believe this article will

be of good use to my research inquiry due to the broad overview of anime and the research

survey the authors conducted. Baird's research goes more in-depth on the positive and negative

effects of anime on children, adolescents, and adults.
