Group member: Nono, Huy, Hop

Article of background information:

1. What is “gender”?
Gender is the social and cultural differences a society assigns to people based on their
biological sex. Some people misunderstand the definition as the definition of “sex” that is a
biological concept. Sex is the biological differences between female and males that are governed
at the moment of conception and develop in the womb and throughout childhood and
adolescence. Gender is ongoing task in our society because gender always relates our life.
2. What is gender role?
“Gender role” is a significant term in the field of gender inequality. The definition is a
society’s expectation of people’s behavior and attitude based on whether they are female or
males. Knowing gender roles and the concept is a fundamental process for studying gender
inequality. Gender role is created through our stereotype, communication or media. For example,
when a child is born in a family, many people gave their family pink shoes or clothes if the child
is a girl. This is a kind of gender role. People desire that girls are feminine, and boys are
masculine. Like this example, the gender role are found in various situation such as religion, job
and school.
3. Background information:
Now more and more women have to face with gender inequality although they have had some
rules and protests to protect their opportunities, their equal income, and their position in society. In fact,
women who have a higher education still have low status in occupation than men who have lower
education. For example, woman who has a bachelor degree does not seem to get a high position in
organization such as CEOs, schools, lawyers, health care, etc. On the other hand, man who just has
associate degree tend to have higher position. There are so many reasons to explain that issue, but
there are three significant causes for it which are differences biology between men and women,
religious beliefs, and different cultures. In general, married women tend to stay at home and take care
of their house and their children, they are not allowed to go to outside and find a job to work, but that
stereotype (thinking that people usually set a form for something) has changed to the positive side now.
More and more women are allowed to work when they have childs because of children daycare
services. Therefore, women tend to have chances to get higher income, more opportunities, and higher
position in society.
