Development
Human Development
IS DEFINED AS THE PROCESS OF
ENLARGING PEOPLE’S FREEDOMS AND
OPPORTUNITIES AND IMPROVING THEIR
WELL-BEING.
FOUR MAJOR
DOMAINS OF
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
1. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
2. COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
3. SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
4. LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
Physical
Development
DEFINED AS THE BIOLOGICAL
CHANGES THAT OCCUR IN THE
BODY AND BRAIN.
Cognitive
Development
DEFINED AS THE CHANGES IN THE
WAY WE THINK, UNDERSTAND, AND
REASON ABOUT THE WORLD.
PIAGET’S 4 STAGES OF
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
THE SENSORIMOTOR
STAGE:

A PERIOD OF TIME BETWEEN

BIRTH AND AGE TWO DURING
WHICH AN INFANT’S KNOWLEDGE
OF THE WORLD IS LIMITED TO HIS
OR HER SENSORY PERCEPTIONS
AND MOTOR ACTIVITIES.
THE PREOPERATIONAL
STAGE:

A PERIOD BETWEEN AGES TWO

AND SIX DURING WHICH A CHILD
LEARNS TO USE LANUAGE.
THE CONCRETE
OPERATIONAL STAGE:
A PERIOD BETWEEN AGES SEVEN
AND ELEVEN DURING WHICH
CHILDREN GAIN BETTER
UNDERSTANDING OF MENTAL
OPERATIONS.
THE FORMAL
OPERATIONAL STAGE:

A PERIOD BETWEEN AGES TWELVE

TO ADULTHOOD AND WHEN PEOPLE
DEVELOP THEIR ABILITY TO THINK
ABOUT ABSTRACT CONCEPTS.
Social-Emotional
Development
DEFINED AS THE CHANGES IN THE
WAYS WE CONNECT TO OTHER
INDIVIDUALS AND EXPRESS AND
UNDERSTAND EMOTIONS.

THEY CAN SAY. IN OTHER WORDS,
COMPREHENSION PRECEDES
PRODUCTION OF LANUAGE.

ASPECTS OF
LANGUAGE:

BRAIN

Broca’s Area - important for the speech production.

Wernicke’s Area - important for understanding and

making sense out of speech.
2 Approaches to Human
Development
TRADITIONAL- extensive change from birth to adolescence
little or no change in adulthood and decline in late old age.
LIFE SPAN- is a theoretical perspective that emphasizes the
lifelong nature of human development. It recognizes that people
change in a variety of ways throughout their lives, both physically
and mentally. The life-span approach also takes into account the
importance of both biological and environmental influences on
development.
Characteristics of Human Development
from a Life-span Perspective
Development is lifelong.
Development is plastic.
Development is multidimensional.
Development is contextual.
Development involves growth maintenance
and regulation.
