Habit 1: BE
PROACTIVE
I am RESPONSIBLE for my education and life.

PROACTIVE people are DRIVEN by VALUES.

REACTIVE people are DRIVEN by FEELINGS.

Proactive people are able to STICK TO

the COMMITMENTS you make to
yourself and to others.
I have a PLAN for what I want to

Habit 2: BEGIN ACCOMPLISH.

WITH THE END

Each day of your life should
CONTRIBUTE to the VISION you have for

IN MIND
YOUR LIFE as a whole.

Covey states that the most effective way to

begin with the end in mind is to CREATE a
PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT.
1. What you want to be (Character)
2. What you want to do (Contributions and
achievements)
3. The values upon which both of these things
are based.
Habit 3: PUT
FIRST THINGS
FIRST
I do the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS FIRST.

Its focus is on the PRACTICE of

EFFECTIVE SELF-MANAGEMENT through
INDEPENDENT WILL.

Having an INDEPENDENT WILL means

you are CAPABLE of MAKING DECISIONS
and ACTING ON THEM.
Habit 1 encourages you to
realize YOU ARE IN
CHARGE OF YOUR OWN
LIFE, and habit two is
based on the ABILITY TO
VISUALIZE and to IDENTIFY
YOUR KEY VALUES, habit 3
is the IMPLEMENTATION
OF THESE TWO HABITS.
Habit 4:
THINK
WIN/WIN
I am CONSIDERATE of OTHERS, but I also
have the COURAGE to STAND UP for
MYSELF.

Win/Win is a philosophy of human

interaction. It’s a frame of mind that seeks
out a MUTUAL BENEFIT for ALL concerned.

COOPERATION, NOT COMPETITION.

CHARACTER
Acting with integrity, maturity, and an
“abundance mentality”

To be an effective win/win RELATIONSHIPS

leader, you must embrace Nourish relationships to maintain a
five independent dimensions: high level of trust

AGREEMENTS

resources, accountability, and
consequences
WIN/WIN PERFORMANCE
AGREEMENTS & SUPPORTIVE
SYSTEMS
PROCESSES
All processes must allow win/win
solutions to arise.

FIRST TO
UNDERSTAND,
THEN TO BE
UNDERSTOOD

OPINION.

COMMUNICATING CLEARLY is ESSENTIAL for your

OVERALL EFFECTIVENESS.
Habit 6: SYNERGIZE
I VALUE the STRENGTHS of OTHER people and COMBINE THEM with MY
OWN to SOLVE problems.

When synergy is operating at its fullest, it incorporates the desire to

reach win/win agreements with EMPATHIC COMMUNICATION.

Synergy is BALANCING the MENTAL, EMOTIONAL, and PSYCHOLOGICAL

DIFFERENCES between a GROUP of PEOPLE.

This involves TEAMWORK, TEAM BUILDING, and the CREATION of UNITY

with OTHER HUMAN BEINGS.
Habit 7:
SHARPEN THE
SAW
I REGULARLY RECHARGE my BODY, HEART, MIND, and
SPIRIT so I can STAY SHARP and IMPROVE MYSELF.

To “sharpen the saw” means to EXPRESS and

EXERCISE the FOUR (physical, social/emotional,
spiritual, mental) MOTIVATIONS REGULARLY and
CONSISTENTLY.
Habit 1: Be proactive.
Habit 2: Begin with the end in
mind.
Habit 3: Put first things first.
Habit 4: Think win/win.
Habit 5: Seek first to
understand, then to be
understood.
