General Requirement of Geo-Tech Investigation

The field Investigation must be done as per IRC:78 and IS codes mentioned there in work
and laboratory tests shall be carried out as per relevant IS and IRC codes currently in use
and as described below. IRC:78-2014 shall be followed for recommending bearing
capacity and pile load capacity.
1) The depth of boring will be restricted to maximum depths as per boring proposal and
may be modified as directed by CLIENT Representative as per observed field
condition. Bore shall be of 150 mm diameter in soil and shall be drilled by
Shell/Augur boring/Rotary drilling resorted by using NX size Diamond Cutting bit
rock. The maximum depth of boring in rock will be 3m if Rock Quality Designation
(RQD) is found >75% value observed in continuous two drill.
2) In each bore 1st and 2nd UDS shall be taken at 0.75m and 1.5m depth (washing should
be done in between sampling), there after SPT/CPT/Vane shear and UDS samples
shall be collected at 1.5m interval wherever applicable. The number of blows and
corresponding depth of penetration to be given in case of lesser penetration. The
report shall include all the test results of UDS and/or DS/SPT for all the location that
conducted during investigation.
3) Diamond bit shall be used for weathered rock / hard rock using single tube core barrel
(in hard unfractured rock strata)/Double tube core barrel (in fractured/soft/weathered
rock strata) with minimum size of core shall not be less than 54mm (NX size). Boring
tools shall be capable of circulating water with enough pressure to wash out settled
cuttings at bottom of bore.
4) Bore shall include this information: Driller agency name, supervisor name, project
name, diameter of bore, method of boring, type of machine, bore hole location and
chainage, bore number, start and End date, water table depth, northing easting, depth
of drilling and sampling, drilling time for each sampling and testing interval, visual
description, water color, Length of line, results of field test (e.g. SPT number),
sample number, casing length, measurements of UDS and SPT recovery. Details of
rocks drilling data such as Core recovery, R.Q.D, Drilling rate, Colour of water,
hardness of rock, loss of water (if any), depth of grouting if done, type of barrel used,
exact start level of rock, number of core samples recovered in barrel etc. along with
the pathological and geological information such as composition, origin, structure,
formation of rock, type of rock and its description according to IS:4464-1985 (copy
enclosed) shall be included in the Report. Description of soil should give idea about
soil type, color, state (denseness), consistency, approximate fines and coarse,
saturation etc.
5) Important precautions should be taken for: Casing use in case of cohesionless strata,
waxing and packing in plastic bag of UDS instantly after sampling, SPT shoe should
be in good condition and checked before performing each SPT, weight of SPT
hammer should be 63.5 kg, Drilling rod should not be inclined, free fall of 75 cm
must be kept exact, for undisturbed sampling marking of 50cm (varies based on
length of UDS tube) on drilling rod etc.
6) Samples of soil and rock encountered during drilling shall be collected in a
chronological order and shall be marked and preserved in core box with proper
identification slips for carrying out the laboratory tests and to be produced along with
report. The cores shall be stored as per IS 4078 – “Code of practice for indexing and
storage of drill cores”.
7) Rock samples encountered shall be evaluated for Core Recovery (CR), RQD and
other geological parameter as per IS 4464 -1985 and the logs shall be prepared as per
IS 4464 -1985 Appendix C and submitted.
8) Bore logs for each bore shall be prepared as per IRC -78 and daily progress report to
be submitted to the client as per clause 2.1 of Appendix A of IS: 4464-1985.
9) Water table shall be noted in each bore after 24 hours of termination. Also collect
water samples for chemical analysis of water.
10) All Soil Samples from UDS sampler shall be tested for field density and moisture
content, Atterberg Limits, Free swelling, Specific gravity, porosity, tri-axial shear test
and consolidation test & chemical analysis of soil depending upon the type of soil as
per relevant IS code and rock samples (If) recovered from rock drilling shall be tested
for Rock Quality Designation (RQD), Core-Recovery (CR), visual classification,
density, specific gravity and unconfined compression test. The testing schedule is
presented in below table.
