Preventive Dental Materials .
Prof.Al Buni.S 2
P.D.M are designed to prevent injury or
disease to the teeth and supporting tissues .
They are :
1- fluoride gels.
2-pit and fissures sealants .
3-Mouth protectors .
Prof.Al Buni.S 3
Fluoride has many forms as Gel ,rinses , and
varnishes .
It is applied to prevent smooth-surface
caries .
Prof.Al Buni.S 4
Pit and fissures sealants are polymers
applied to the occlusal surface of posterior
teeth to prevent pit and fissure caries .
Prof.Al Buni.S 5
Mouth Protectors are made from polymers
formed by heat to fit over the tooth of the
maxillary arch to protect the mouth from
sudden blows that could fracture and
dislodge the teeth .
Prof.Al Buni.S 6
Composition of fluoride gel :
2% NaF, 0.34% Hydrogen fluoride and 98%
phosphoric acid .

gel (Louisville ,CO)
Fluoride
Prof.Al Buni.S 9
Properties : Reduction of dental caries was
observed up to 37% to 41 %.
Gel should be viscous enough to be easy in
handling .

Pit and Fissure Sealants :
to prevent pit and fissure of posterior teeth
from caries incidence
Prof.Al Buni.S 12
Recently ,Fissures have been prepared using air
abrasion ( using of alumina particles ) and
filled with a Flowable composite .
This technique is called (( a preventive resin
restoration ))
Prof.Al Buni.S 13
Most commercial pit and fissure sealants
are resins in which polymerization is
activated by light .

Prof.Al Buni.S 19
Manipulation of sealant of Sealants : following 6
steps must sequentially :
1- cleansing and etching the occlusal surface by
phosphoric acid for 60 seconds.
2-Washing these areas for 15 seconds .
3- drying these areas for 15 seconds .
4-Appling the sealant to the pit and fissure .
5- polymerization .
6- finishing .
Prof.Al Buni.S 20
Etching : by phosphoric acid 37%.
Prof.Al Buni.S 21
Most researchers reported that the pit and
fissure sealants effective in prevention of
caries in sealed tooth surface when the
sealant is retained .
Prof.Al Buni.S 22
Dark areas of preconditioned occlusal surface indicate
location of pits and fissures

Application of pit and fissure
sealant with a small tube
Prof.Al Buni.S 24
Polymerization of the sealant can be
activated by the use of a light –curing unit .
Prof.Al Buni.S 25
Light- curing unit
Prof.Al Buni.S 26
The protective plastic tip of the light source
is positioned on the occlusal surface and
held there for 20 seconds at least .
Prof.Al Buni.S 27
Prof.Al Buni.S 28
Amine accelerated sealants :
These sealants require mixing of the base and
initiator components .
Mixing time is 10-15 seconds
Setting time is several minutes
The sealant is finished once polymerized .
Prof.Al Buni.S 29
Mouth Protector :
The centers for disease and prevention
recommends that all players of contact
sports use mouth protectors .
Prof.Al Buni.S 30
62% of injuries occurred in unorganized
sports .
59% of injuries were suffered by children
7-13 years.
38% of sports participants had sustained
orofacial injury.
Prof.Al Buni.S 31
15% of the injured players stated that they
wearing a mouth protector at the time of
their injury .
3:1 The ratio of male to female injuries in all
sporting activities .
Prof.Al Buni.S 32
Injuries most commonly occur Basketball
,Baseball and soccer .
Prof.Al Buni.S 33
Common reactions of teeth to trauma include
pulpits ,pulpal necrosis ,resorption
phenomena ,replacement resorption ,
internal hemorrhage ,pulpal canal oblit-
eration ,and inflammatory resorption.
Prof.Al Buni.S 34
There are three types of mouth protector all
of which offer some protection to athlete
,are :Stock ,Mouth formed , and custom
made .
