WORKING AT HEIGHT Date: 22nd MAY, 2021

Working at height remains one of the biggest causes of fatalities and major injuries. Common cases include falls
from ladders and through fragile surfaces. ‘Work at height’ means work in any place where, if there were no
precautions in place, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury.

Hazards of working at height

• Fall From Height


• Being Struck by Object
• Open Edges
• Falling Objects
• External Factors: e.g High Winds, Heat
Stress, Structural Instability.

Preventive measures:

• Proper and Stable platform to be


ensured for working at height.
• Scaffold Tag system to be followed
strictly, one only can use scaffold while
Green (OK to use) tag is displayed.
• Scaffold guardrails must be of adequate
height (top rail 1.1 meter).
• Proper and secured access to be
provided for platforms.
• Scaffold/cantilever platforms must be
erected/dismantled by competent and
qualified persons.
• Open edges to be secured by hard
barricades.
• Fall protection is required above 1.8
meters of height.
• Make sure full body harness with double
lanyard and shock absorber.
• Ensure FBH is hooked with appropriate
and rigid anchorage point.
• Life line to be used where required.
• Don’t stack loose items on
scaffolds/platforms, (toe boards to be
ensured).
• While using ladder, 1:4 to be maintained.
• Always maintained 3 point contact and
don’t lift any item while climbing on
ladder.
• Platform should not be
overloaded/overcrowded.
• Foreman/Engineer has to ensure PTW
system and RA to be carried out
properly before working at height.
• Area should be barricaded and safety
signage to be displayed.
