ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES
Energy = Frequency
Wavelength – denoted by 𝛌 (lambda)
● Radio Waves – Longest wavelength, lowest
frequencies/energy. Transmit radio and television
signals.
➢ AM Amplitude Modulation – Longer wavelengths
(180-550m)
➢ FM Frequency Modulation – Shorter wavelengths
(2.8-3.4m)
FM receptions are usually poor in localities where AM radio
comes loud and clear.
● Microwaves – High frequency radio waves. Second
to the longest wavelength. Used by antenna.
● Infrared – Discovered infrared in 1800 ⇝ Sir William
Herschel. Passing sunlight through a prism dividing
it into a rainbow of colors. Used a thermometer with
blackened bulbs and measured the temperature of
each color of the spectrum.
● Visible Light – The only EM that is visible to the
human eye. We see lightwaves as the colors of the
rainbow. Red has the longest wavelength, Violet
has the shortest wavelength.
● Ultraviolet – Named because the spectrum
consists of electromagnetic waves higher than
those that humans identify as the color violet.
Produced by high temperature surfaces. (e.g Sun)
Used to detect counterfeits. Overexposure to UV
may lead to skin cancer, melanoma, photokeratitis
(sunburn of the cornea).
● X-rays – High energy waves that have great
penetrating power. X-radiation is called Röntgen
radiation after William Conrad Röntgen.
Overexposure may lead to cancer (leukemia)
● Gamma Rays – Shortest wavelength, highest
frequency/energy. Generated by radioactive atoms
and in nuclear explosions. Used to treat some types
of cancer/destroy cancer cell. Gamma Knife
Surgery.

are closest together
Rarefaction – Furthest apart
Crest – Highest point of the wave
Trough – Lowest point of the wave
Wavelength – Distance between adjacent crests
Amplitude – Height of a wave
The speed/velocity of a wave is determined by the
formula: v = f𝛌
wave speed = v. frequency = f, wavelength = 𝛌, c = constant
c = speed of all electromagnetic waves. where c = 3x10^8
m/s or 300,000,000.
