The Ben Race

The Ben Race is a famous running race in the UK. It is a race up the highest mountain
in the British Isles, Ben Nevis, which is why it is called the Ben Race. The beginning of
the race is at the Klaggan football club near the town of Fort William, a beautiful
settlement overlooking a lake.

People have timed how long it takes to run up and down Ben Nevis since 1895. It is
mostly athletes who do this today but this was not the case in the beginning. In fact, a
barber, or men’s hairdresser, was the first person to run up and time himself. Since
1951, the race has been an annual event, which happens every September. The only
year it didn’t take place was in 1980. That year it was a normal windy, sunny day, but
extremely cold. People were anxious about the dangerous icy paths.

There are some rules for the Ben Race. For example, all competitors must carry a
waterproof jacket, a hat, and gloves as the weather can change quickly. Some choose
to carry high-calorie snacks and energy drinks. It isn’t a very long race – it’s only 14
kilometres and it’s never very crowded as only 600 people can compete. However, it is
a very hard race because the paths are very stony and rocky.

Kenny Stewart in 1984, and Victoria Wilkinson in 2018, made the fastest times for men
and women. The first person to win it more than once was taxi driver Eddie Campbell,
who won it three times. The first of these was in 1952. In 2019, Finlay Wild won the
race for the tenth year in a row, more than anyone else in the history of the race.
