Warm-up 3/6/24: Transition Math

1. You and your friend are trying to solve a division-problem using the standard algorithm. But, when you both solved it, you
both got different answers! Who got the right answer and WHY?

YOU! YOUR FRIEND!

Finished early? Use the standard algorithm to solve the following:

1. 568 ÷ 9 2. 761÷ 6 3. 56.8 ÷ .9 4. 7.61 ÷ .06
Take a look at these expressions that all share the same quotient. Why do you
think this happens? What do you notice about each expression?
1. 7.20 ÷ .8
2. 72.0 ÷ 8
3. 720 ÷ 80
4. 7200 ÷ 800
What is the quotient of each of these expressions?
We saw that multiplying by powers of 10 in both the divisor and dividend created a related
expression. What does that look like in standard algorithm?
Set up and solve the following problem using standard algorithm.
24.5 ÷ .7

Turn to page 587 and work with your table groups to

solve problems 1-3!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
● Place-value and related expressions can be used to create problems you can
use with long division (the standard-algorithm for division)
● When we create related expressions to help us divide, the QUOTIENT does
not change
● When the DIVISOR is a decimal, we can multiply both the divisor and
dividend by the same power of 10 to create an equivalent expression
