Catch UP Friday Narrative Report

February 23, 2024

I. RATIONALE

The Department of Education has released the guidelines for the implementation of its
“Catch Up Fridays” learning intervention program, which will be officially rolled out in public
schools nationwide starting January 12. DepEd Memorandum 001 s. 2024 states that the
“Catch Up Fridays” program will dedicate half of every Friday to reading and the other half to
values, peace and health education. DepEd said that its reading program will “give learners
opportunities for reading intervention and reading enhancement through developmentally
appropriate reading materials.”

II. INTRODUCTION

In line with the DepEd Memorandum 001 s. 2024 states that the “Catch Up Fridays”
program, Peace Education themes can be integrated into Technology and Livelihood Education
(TLE) to allow learners to explore how technology can be used for conflict resolution,
communication, and community building. Peace education is the process of acquiring values,
knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors to live in harmony with oneself, others, and the
natural environment. There are numerous United Nations declarations and resolutions on the
importance of peace.

III. OBJECTIVES
A. To prepare the environment and learners for the peace education learning session;
B. To equip learners with the appropriate knowledge, skills, and values in Peace Education;
C. To reflect on learning experiences in Peace Education; and
D. To consolidate information gained from the learning session in Peace Education.
III. BACKGROUND

According to DepEd, Catch-up Friday is a “learning mechanism intended to strengthen

the foundation, social, and other relevant skills necessary to actualize the intent of the basic
education curriculum.” Catch-up Friday shall not be graded. Since its main objective is to
reinforce learning, individual progress shall be monitored through the learner's Reflection
Journal, compiling reading experiences, leanings, and appreciation of Values, Health, and
Peace Education. Learners may also articulate their thoughts through various forms of writing,
such as stories, journals, personal essays, and other forms of creative expression that reflect
their unique learning experiences.
