Instructional Objectives:

● By the end of class, students will demonstrate how to play the low and high drum parts
on their drum with teacher assistance.

General Objectives

● Continue to develop respect for instruments through class discussion

● Learn about the musical instruments of Africa
● Improve on the echo and question / Answer patterns through different rhythms and
phrases.

Opening/Introduction Activity

Review

● T: Ask S what they remember from last week

● S: mention following aspects from last class
 ○ Respecting the drums/each other
○ How to play high and low tones
○ Alt hands
○ Bouncing off

Learning Opportunities/Procedure:

Echo 1

● Review open tones

○ Play on thigh

Echo 2

● Review and dive into playing high and low tones

○ Play 2 beat patterns
○ Have students close their eyes and raise their hand once they hear a high/low
tone played.
○ Facilitate alternating hands

Question and Answer

● Create different questions

○ Practice with voice only - voice and drum - drumming only
○ SHADOW DRUMMING

Jam Session

● Finish class by playing a backing track of African drumming and jam out!!

● Assign rhythms to words and phrases for interpretation.

● Model with drum head tilted towards the class for visual assistance.
