Legend of Banyuwangi

Once upon a time, in eastern part of Java Island, there was a local ruler
named King Sulahkromo. The king had a Prime Minister named Raden Sidopekso.
The Prime Minister had a wife named Sri Tanjung. She was so beautiful that the king
wanted her to be his wife.
One day, the King sent his Prime Minister to a long mission. While the Prime
Minister was away, the King tried to get Sri Tanjung. However he failed. He was very
angry. Thus, when Sidopekso went back, the King told him that his wife was
unfaithful to him. The Prime Minister was very angry with his wife. Sri Tanjung said
that it was not true. However, Sidopekso said that he would kill her.
He brought her to the river bank. Before he kill her and threw her into the river,
she said that her innocence would be proven. After Sidopekso killed her, he threw
her dead body into the dirty river.
The river immediately became clean and began to spread a wonderful fragrance.
Sidopekso said, “Banyu…Wangi… Banyuwangi”. This means “fragrant water”.
Banyuwangi was born from the proof of noble and sacred love.

‘Legend’ belongs to ‘Narrative’

Legends are concerned with the retelling of


imaginary and real events. They tell stories about
famous incidents that happened in the distant past.
Often it is not clear whether the characters really
existed. Legends often have bits added to them over
the years as they are told and retold. The original
author may not be known because the story has been
shaped by many people over time.

Legend is a ‘Narrative’
If we read Legend, we will find some parts, such as:
❖ Orientation :
It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are
introduced.
(berisi pengenalan tokoh, tempat dan waktu terjadinya cerita (siapa atau
apa, kapan dan dimana)
❖ Complication :
• Where the problems in the story developed. What happened with the
characters?
(Permasalahan muncul / mulai terjadi dan berkembang pada si tokoh)
❖ Resolution :
• Where the problems in the story is solved. How did the characters
overcome the problems?
(Masalah selesai, --- bagaimana si tokoh mengatasi masalahnya)
❖ Reorientation (optional) Last condition of the main characters
(Masalah selesai, --- secara baik "happy ending" atau pun buruk "bad
ending").
❖ Coda (optional) Good values of the story

The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu Mountain

Once, there was a kingdom in Priangan Land. Lived a happy family. They were
a father in form of dog,his name is Tumang, a mother which was called is Dayang
Sumbi, and a child which was called Sangkuriang.
One day Dayang Sumbi wanted to have deer’s heart so she asked Sangkuriang to hunt
for a deer. Then Sangkuriang went to the wood with his arrow and his faithful dog Tumang.
But after several days in the wood Sangkuriang could not find any deer. They were all
disappeared. Sangkuriang was exhausted and desperate. He did not want to disappoint her
mother so he killed Tumang. He did not know that Tumang was his father. At home he gave
Tumang’s heart to her mother. But Dayang Sumbi knew that it was Tumang’s heart. She was
so angry that she could not control her emotion. She hit Sangkuriang at his head. Sangkuriang
was wounded. There was a scar in his head. She also repelled her son. Sangkuriang left her
mother in sadness.
Many years passed and Sangkuriang became a strong young man. He wandered
everywhere. One day he arrived at his own village but he did not realized it. There he met
Dayang Sumbi. At the time Dayang Sumbi was given an eternal beauty by God so she stayed
young forever. Both of them did not know each other. So they fell in love and then they decided
to marry.
But then Dayang Sumbi recognized a scar on his Sangkuriang’s head. She knew that
Sangkuriang was his son. It was impossible for them to marry. She told him but he did not
believe her. He wished that they marry soon. So Dayang Sumbi gave a very difficult condition.
She wanted Sangkuriang to build a lake and a boat in one night! She said she needed that for
honeymoon.
Sangkuriang agreed. With the help of genie and spirits Sangkuriang tried to build them. By
midnight he had finished the lake by building a dam in Citarum river. Then he started building
the boat. It was almost dawn when he nearly finished it. Meanwhile Dayang Sumbi kept
watching on them. She was very worried when she knew this. So she made lights in the east.
Then the spirits thought that it was already dawn. It was time for them to leave. They left
Sangkuriang alone. Without their help he could not finish the boat.
Sangkuriang was very angry. He kicked the boat. Then the boat turned out to be Mount
Tangkuban Perahu. It means boat upside down. From a distant it looks like a boat upside down.
