LMCE1072
ACADEMIC LITERACY
Course Description

o This course aims to build students’ academic skills, particularly in


reading, analysing texts, and communicating in the academic
context. This course adopts the eclectic approach.
o It is worth 2 credits which is equivalent to 80 hours of Student
Learning Time (SLT).
o Across 14 academic weeks, 28 hours are allocated for guided learning
while the remaining 52 hours are for independent learning (refer to
LMCE1072 Proforma).
Course Entrance Qualifications

 Academic Literacy (LMCE1072) is offered to first-year students as a university


requirement course.
 Malaysian students taking this course must have obtained MUET Band 4.0 or 4.5.
 International students must have either one of the following:

English Competency Test Grade

IELTS 5.5 - 6.0

TOEFL iBT 46 - 60

TOEFL Essentials (Online) 8 - 8.5

Pearson Test of English (PTE) 51 - 59


Course Target

Entry-level students of MUET band 4.0, Exit-level students of CEFR B2+ can (Council

By the end of the course students should be able to:

 Choose authoritative text on the selected topic (A3);


 Organise ideas based on analysis of text (A4);
 Elaborate a current topic in groups (A4).

1. Classes are conducted hybrid (online and physical) in either


synchronous or asynchronous mode, depending on the respective
instructor’s teaching plans.

2. However, this teaching & learning arrangement is subject to the


instructions and guidelines given by the university from time to
time.

3. As a university student, independent learning is a necessary part


of the learning process.

4. You are advised to prepare for class by referring to
learning materials available in UKMFolio. Studying before
class would make the lesson taught easily understood.

5. Students' commitment to attend classes is vital to


ensure continuous understanding as each topic is
interrelated.

6. Missing classes and not contributing effectively to group


work will result in reduced marks in coursework.

 Students are required to complete two (2) major assignments for this course:

 The assignments are inter-connected and require you to remain in the same group while
working collaboratively and independently on the same selected theme.
A. Text Dissect (40%)

Instructions

1. Form a group of 4 to 5 students, and select a theme from the list given (see next slide).
2. Identify a topic/issue to be further explored within the selected theme. The topic should
provide an active and interesting discussion. Your group will continue to work on the
same theme for the next component (assignment) of the course, so discuss it thoroughly.
3. Select one written text from a reliable source on your selected topic/issue. Use the
LMCE1072 Text Selection Criteria (available in UKMFolio) and CRAAP Test to evaluate your
text.
4. Analyse the text using TEDCO. Fill in the TEDCO collaboratively and independently.
5. Turn in your assignment in Week 8 in UKMFolio.

Instructions

1. In your group, focus on the same theme and topic/issue that you worked on in Text
Dissect. This will be the basis for your forum.
2. Identify one student as the moderator, while the remaining students in the group
are the panellists for the forum. You may take up roles that are appropriate and
relevant to your forum discussion.
3. Use GEO to outline your opinion and supporting evidence. You may use the text in
Text Dissect. Ideally, include evidence from additional sources as well.
4. ONE GEO is to be submitted per group by week 13 via UKMFolio. Group members
are expected to check each other’s sections and ensure coherence between
sections.
5. Conduct a 20- to 30-minute forum online. The forum must be recorded for grading
purposes.
6. Turn in your assignment by the 14th of July 2023 in UKMFolio.
The criteria of an outstanding forum (but not limited to these) are:

A discussion that is spontaneous and lively among all members of


the forum and well organised;

Contains clear opinions with appropriate and relevant evidence


from all members of the forum;

Engages the audience’s interest and attention throughout the


forum.
