NIM: 049545953
SUBJECT: Cross Cultural Understanding (PBIS4102)

Question:
In your opinion, how culture is related to language? And find examples from different
cultures and languages!
Answer:
After I read any references, so I know how culture is relate to language, but first I need to
explain the meaning of culture and language. Culture is about the characteristics and
patterns of a group of people, like ways of speaking, ways of walking, ways of expressing
something and in a culture whatever it is, language is also including with. Whereas, language
is an expression that have meaning to tell with someone else by using words who everyone
can understand it.
How culture is related to language?. Of course, the both of them are related each other,
because culture-language is linked how we can make any adaptation in society. The most
important thing that language isn’t just a tool of communication, but also include in culture.
From language what we use with, people will know our culture where we are from. When
we learn any language, we don’t just learn the language, but also learn the dialect, the
norms, the values, the customs.
For example: In Indonesia we have much cultures, and languages, if I am not mistaken that
Indonesia has more than 715 indigenous languages, and they have their own cultures also.
In Javanese to call who older than us for man is “Mas” and who older than us for woman
“Mbak.” In other language to call who older than us they have their own language, like in
Minagkabau language they call brother in” Ajo” and for sister they will call “Uni”.
