Reges Oceanfront Resort to Make Beaches Smoke-free,

Despite Governor’s Recent Bill
Resort announced the ban will go into effect on June 1

WILDWOOD CREST, N.J. (March 31, 2017)- New Jersey-based Reges Oceanfront Resort
has declared it is implementing a smoking ban on its beaches starting June 1. This came in
response to Governor Chris Christie vetoing a smoking ban on beaches, waterfronts and public
parks passed by the New Jersey State Legislature.

Reges has been family-owned and operated for 40 years now. The Resort is committed to
improving public health across the state. It is hoping to inspire more parks and beaches to follow
in its footsteps. Reges hopes to create a safer environment that attracts more families and reduces
waste on and around the beach. Reges President and General Manager Anthony Mollica hopes to
continue working with the New Jersey Legislature to fight for statewide smoke-free beaches.

New Jersey’s neighbor New York has implemented many smoke-free zones across its parks
statewide. It has successfully created smoke-free zones in many public spaces statewide.
Research has shown that New York City residents are exposed to much greater amounts of
secondhand smoke compared to the rest of the United States. In addition, “Studies suggest that
sitting three feet away from a smoker outdoors can expose you to the same level of secondhand
smoke as if you were sitting indoors with a smoker. Secondhand smoke can trigger asthma
attacks, increase the risk of blood clots and hurt blood vessels.”

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, “CPSTF found strong evidence
that smoke-free policies reduce secondhand smoke exposure, tobacco use, and tobacco-related
diseases and deaths and increase successful quit attempts. In addition, economic evidence
indicates that smoke-free policies can reduce health care costs substantially and that smoke-free
policies don’t hurt businesses, including bars and restaurants.” Mollica stated, “Reges Oceanside
Resort is dedicated to improving public health across New Jersey and creating a clean, safe
environment.”
