unreasonableness. “do without. being told.” It adds an extra level of discipline to
both old and new employees and sets a standard of
excellence
SORT-S1

This step is set up to help you remove unnecessary

items from your work life.

It is proven that if you only have what you need around

you, you are bound to be more focused on the task at
hand and not distracted and crowded by items in your
workspace.

A regular cleaning and maintenance count of things you

do and do not need can help you free up extra space and
get on the right path.
SORT-S1

Categorize equipment,
furniture, tool in your working place into the following 3
categories

1. Necessary
2. Unnecessary
3. May not be necessary

• This step will also help with the “just in case”

attitude- Reduce stress and ensure optimal
output under pressure.
SORT-S1
While doing Sorting keep in mind :

✓ How often things are used.

✓ What is the lifespan/shelf life of the material.
✓ Cost of the material
✓ Recommended storage technique
✓ The weight size, color (Physical variations)
SORT-S1
Consequences of not following Sorting:

✓ Increased work load and high risk of accidents.

✓ The wanted is hard to find, when required.
✓ More space is demanded.
✓ Unwanted items cause misidentification.
✓ Misidentification causes errors in operation.
✓ Maintenance cost of the equipment increases.
SET IN ORDER-S2

This will improve your workflow and maintain a safe

environment.

You will also ensure that everything that you do need is in

an easily accessible place so that your tools will always be
within arms reach.

By having access to all of the necessary tools, this

enables employees to get their work done quickly, and
with less frustration.
SET IN ORDER-S2

✓ “Set” is based on finding efficient and effective storage of

necessary items

✓ Identifying places to arrange the things and placing them in

proper order for prompt usage.

✓ “A place for everything and everything in its place.”

✓ This will save time and energy to look for something
✓ Labeling of the area and the equipment is very important.
✓Keep proper gaps between two things to avoid confusion.
SET IN ORDER-S2
Consequences of not following Set-in-Order:

✓ Things are seldom available when needed

✓ Items get lost

✓ Items get mixed up

✓ Visual control not possible

✓ Failure to achieve targets

indications, display, cautions

difference between normality and abnormality.

✓ Non - users of the equipment also become aware of its use

and precautions.
SET IN ORDER-S2

Have consensus among

co-workers on where and
how to organize necessary
items
SHINE-S3

This step should be used to organize a regular cleaning

schedule.

It also ensures that the place you are working in is safe

and in tip top condition.

A benefit of this step is that any regular worker will be

able to recognize when something is out of place or
unsafe and get everything up to par in a matter of
seconds. This is because they are so used to seeing it
in perfect condition.
SHINE-S3

• Cleaning up one’s workplace daily so that there is no

dust on floors, machines or equipment.

• The area should say “ Who I’m” and its neatness

should give you a natural welcome.

• It will create ownership and build pride in the workers

SHINE-S3

Consequences of not practicing Shine:

✓ Performance of machines deteriorates

✓ The quality / aesthetic quality deteriorates

✓ Dirty place is unpleasant and hazardous to health.

✓ Sends uncaring and irresponsible message to the team

members and society at large.

✓ People working at dirty areas are generally found to have

low desire to excel and their motivation level is low.
STANDARDIZE-S4

This small change will encourage everyone to take pride in

their workplace and build a standard that everyone has to
follow.

You should also ensure that every station in the workplace

has a clear, easy to understand process.
Having this process in place allows everyone to complete
their job in less time, which helps both the company and
employees learn what needs to be done on a day-to-day
basis.
STANDARDIZE-S4

Keep all the 4 M’s ( Man., Machine, Material and Method)

intact, a lapse in any one of them will make you loose the
S1
rest of the three .
S2
• Maintain an environment where S1 toS3 are implemented
in the same manner throughout the organization
S3
Standardization will leads equalization of activities
= “Production leveling and smoothing”
STANDARDIZE-S4
Consequences of not following Standardization:

✓ Dual standards yield multiple results.

S1
✓ Multiple results lead to conflicts and confusions.
S2
✓ Rework increases.
S3
✓ Rework increases the basic cost of the
finished product without any value addition
SUSTAIN S5-
SELF DISCIPLINE

Everyone knows what is expected of them, and they know that

their feedback is crucial to the process. Audits should also be
put in place during this step so that you can ensure that the
company is following all of the other steps put in place.

It is a great way to make sure your company runs like a well-

oiled machine ZERO accident and minimal wastage.

Everyone knows their place and what they need to do to help

the company run at maximum efficiency.
SUSTAIN S5- SELF DISCIPLINE

How to practice SUSTAIN

✓ Train all team members on 4-S

✓ Correct wrong practices on the spot

✓ Punctuality is the backbone of 5S

✓ Follow work instructions.

Summary
5S is not a cleaning campaign.
It is a basis of organization management

Following 5 S will help us:

✓ Maintain good product quality.

✓ Ensure safety and cleanliness.
✓ Improve your efficiency and productivity
✓ Maintain good control over the processes
