Two-Port Networks

1
Two-Port Network

• A pair of terminals through which a current may enter or

leave a network is known as a port.
• A two-port network is an electrical network with two
separate ports for input and output.
• A two-port network has two terminal pairs acting as
access points.
• As shown in Fig, the current entering one terminal of a
pair leaves the other terminal in the pair. Three-terminal
devices such as transistors can be configured into two-
port networks.
• Various terms that relates voltages and currents of two
port networks are called a parameters.
• Impedance and admittance are commonly used
parameters

Admittance (Y ) Parameters

• There is a need for an alternative means of describing

such a network. This need may be met by the second set
of parameters, which we obtain by expressing the terminal
currents in terms of the terminal voltages.

Hybrid (H) Parameter

• The z and y parameters of a two-port network do not

always exist. So there is a need for developing
another set of parameters. This third set of parameters
is based on making V1 and I2 the dependent
variables. Thus, we obtain
• V1 = h11I1 + h12V2
• I2 = h21I1 + h22V2
