Abstract
The objective of this white paper is to compare various tasks on both the CDC and WHO
websites and see which performs better. Both websites are major sources of important health
information for the public regarding vaccinations, travel, and basic health data and statistics.

Introduction
The purpose of this white paper is to compare the usability of two highly regarded government
websites, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.
People rely on these organizations for vital information regarding personal health and travel. The
average user will have basic computer knowledge, such as navigating the internet and
downloading files.
Methods
Tasks
1. Access and download data.
2. Explore various health topics.
3. Find contact information.
4. Searching for specific topic or idea
5. Finding updated COVID 19 information
6. Finding traveler information
7. Exploring current disease outbreaks
8. Finding job postings
9. Changing language preferences
10. Finding publications
Test Environment
The test was performed on my MacBook Pro laptop. I used the latest version of Safari browser to
access both the CDC and WHO websites.
Metrics
The criteria used for the metrics:

Evaluation Criteria
The metrics will be evaluated using a 5-point Likert scale, starting with 1 at “Strongly disagree”
and ending with 5 at “Strongly Agree” as seen in Table 1.

Results
Task 1 - Access and download data
CDC – Once on the home screen of the CDC, the user will find the ‘Data & Stats’ option and
click it. This will bring the user to the data and statistics page where they have access to many
types of data and statistics. The user then clicks a topic that they want, and then can choose what
type of data, whether that be trends, demographics, charts, maps, etc. From there the user can
read raw or sorted data, and download.
WHO – Once on the home screen of the WHO, the user will find and click the ‘Data’ drop-down
menu. The user will click which data or statistics they want to explore, then click and it will take
them to desired page. From there, the user can easily download data sets.

Task 2 – Explore various health topics

CDC – The user will go to the CDC home screen, then click ‘Health Topics’. There is an A-Z
list, or an option to search by name.
WHO – The user will go to the WHO home page, then click the ‘Health Topics’ drop down
menu. There is an A-Z directory or an option to search by name.

Task 3 – Find contact information

CDC – The user will begin on the CDC home page and scroll down to the bottom of the page.
There is a ‘Contact Us’ link, once clicked it brings the user to a CDC Information page with
many resources to contact.
WHO – The user will begin on the WHO home page and scroll down to the bottom of the page.
There is a large ‘Contact Us’ link, and when the user clicks it, they are brought to a page with
many contact resources.

Task 4 – Searching for specific topic or idea

CDC – The user begins on the CDC home page, then navigates to the search bar in the upper
right corner.
WHO – The user begins on the WHO home page, then navigates up to the magnifying glass icon
in the upper right corner.

CDC – The user begins on the home page, and must search for COVID 19, as it is not
automatically on the home page.
WHO – The user begins om the home page, and clicks on the health topics drop down menu.
COVID 19 is an option on that list.

Task 6 – Finding traveler information

CDC – The user begins on the home page, then clicks the ‘Travelers’ Health’ tab. This brings
them to a page where they can find updated information on vaccines, diseases, clinics, and other
helpful resources for travelers.
WHO – The user begins on the home page, then clicks on the ‘Countries’ drop down menu.
From here the user can choose what country they want to travel to and updated traveler
information.

Task 7 – Exploring current disease outbreaks

CDC – Starting on the home page, the user clicks the ‘Outbreaks’ tab. This brings them to the
CDC Current Outbreak List, where they can explore updated outbreaks and travel notices for
people traveling outside of the US.
WHO – Starting on the home page, the user clicks on the ‘Emergencies’ drop-down menu,
which has a ‘Disease Outbreak News’ link. On this page the user has the option to search, or
there is a list of current world-wide outbreaks.

Task 8 – Finding job postings

CDC – The user begins on the home page and scrolls down to the bottom. There is a Careers and
Jobs link that takes the user to a page where they can either search by keyword for a specific job
posting or scroll through a list of postings.
WHO – Starting on the home page, the user will scroll to the bottom. Under the ‘About Us’ tab,
there is a link for ‘Careers’. The Careers page offers a plethora of information regarding job
postings, benefits, and featured employees.

CDC – Beginning on the home page, the user will navigate to the upper right corner to the
‘Other Languages’ tab. Here they can change their language preference.
WHO – Beginning on the home page, the user navigates to the upper right corner to the ‘Select
Language’ option. Here they can choose what language to set as their preference.

Task 10 – Finding publications

CDC – Starting on the home page, the user will click the ‘Publications’ tab which will bring
them to the publications page where they can either search by name or scroll through various
topics.
WHO – Starting on the home page, the user will scroll to the bottom of the page. Under the
‘About Us’ tab, there is a link for Publications. This takes the user to a page where they can sort
through publications by regions, or by looking through all publications.

Conclusion
I found that both the CDC and WHO are incredibly accurate on their information and finding
what you need. All tasks were able to be completed, and the websites are both user friendly and
easily accessible.
