The Periodic Table - questions

Use the periodic table to answer the following questions.

Arrangement of Elements:
1. Look at the atomic numbers of the elements. What pattern do you notice of the atomic
numbers from left to right?
________________________________________________________________________
2. Look at the atomic masses of the elements. What pattern do usually you notice of the
atomic masses from left to right?
________________________________________________________________________
3. Look at the atomic masses of Tellurium (Te) and Iodine (I). What do you notice that
is different about these elements from left to right compared to most of the other
elements? _______________________________________________________________
4. So all the elements are arranged in order from left to right by what identifier?
(atomic number or atomic mass) _______________________________

Arrangement of Classes
5. Columns are arranged by chemical properties of the elements.
There are 3 classes of elements (page 80-81). What are these 3 classes?
________________________________________________________________________
6. Notice that the metals are found below and to the left side of the dark stair steps on the
Periodic Table. The metalloids are along the stair steps (purple) from Boron to
Polonium. The nonmetals are above and to the right of the stair steps. The elements as
you move from left to right are metallic to less metallic to nonmetals. In which class of
elements are most of the elements? ___________________
7. What are the typical properties of metals?
A. _____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
B. _____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
C. _____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

8. What are the typical properties of nonmetals?

A. _____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
B. _____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
C. _____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

9. What are the typical properties of metalloids?

A. _____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
B. _____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
C. _____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
Arrangement of Columns
10. The columns are arranged into families. The families are grouped by the number of
valence electrons that they have. Look in the textbook glossary and define valence
electrons.
Valence Electrons - _______________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

Since families have the same number of valence electrons, they have similar chemical
properties. (# valence electrons determines properties of an atom)
Fill in the chart below with the number of valence electrons in each family of elements.
Group number (US#) Family name Number of valence electrons
11. Group 1 (1A) Alkali Metals
12. Group 2 (2A) Alkaline-earth Metals
13. Group 3-12 (1B-8B) Transition Metals
14. Inner Transition Metals
15. Group 13-16 (3A-6A) Mixed Groups
16. Group 17 (7A) Halogens
17. Group 18 (8A) Noble Gases

18. Look at the above chart for the group numbers with an A in parentheses. The US
group number is the same as the number of what? _______________________________

Arrangement of Rows:
The horizontal rows are called periods or series. They do not have similar properties.
As you move from left to right:
Metals - Metalloids - Nonmetals
Atomic Number - increases
19. The period or row that a certain element is located in designates the
________________________ of its valence electrons
