ESSAY & DISSERTATION WRITING GUIDELINES

CREATED ON 1st March, 2024

● All UK work follows the general UK format which requires the following: Intro,
Main Body, Conclusion

● Introduction for a document MUST contain a statement of purpose for the

document, and an outline of the whole document. The reader should be able
to tell the contents of the document after reading the introduction, he should
not be in for a roller coaster ride of uncertainty.

● Written work MUST be written in third person only. There should be no use of
I/We/My/He/She/They.

● Please proofread all submitted work TWICE. All grammatical and spelling
mistakes will be penalized within submitted work. There is no room for silly
mistakes in professional work.

● Review and inspect all course material carefully when it is provided. Clarify
anything that is unclear.

● Having a firm grip of Harvard referencing is mandatory for this work. Please
make sure that there are NO referencing mistakes when you submit the work.

● Do NOT submit rushed work, and take out ample time before the deadline to
ensure that the assessment guidelines have been followed. No matter how
well you can write, rushed work tends to spoil quality and create an
unnecessary hassle for the client and the writer.

● UK format requires heavily researched work. You need to cite any

information/fact/concept taken regarding a certain subject area except for
your own analysis.

● Critical analysis must be evident in all work. Descriptive writing is considered

low quality and failing level work.

● Making use of theories, frameworks, models is a MUST wherever applicable.

It shows critical analysis and helps illustrate your arguments. Needless to say,
these theories, frameworks and models must be cited and applied after
developing a CLEAR understanding rather than just applying them
superficially.

● Direct quotes are HIGHLY discouraged, unless you are citing a definition.
Even then direct quotations should not exceed 5% of the document word limit.
Always incorporate indirect quotes by paraphrasing in your own words.

● The credibility of quotes is determined by their recentness. Try to restrict your

research by setting a filter for the last 5 years (or 10 years maximum). Please
ask for help if you’re unable to find relevant research.

● Sources should only consist of BOOKS and JOURNALS. Blogs are an

absolute NO, and authentic websites should be used for citing facts and
figures such as BBC, Dailymail, etc.

● For management reports, you MUST consult Keynote, Mintel, Datamonitor,

Euromonitor for relevant data. These websites will provide up-to-date market
data that is authentic.

● For UK essays, please try to restrict your research to UK websites for facts,
figures and even journals. Don’t cite information from a study on Nigeria when
talking about UK in the report.
