Turkey
By April Wamhoff
Season
A friend of mine reminded me
it’s turkey season in Montana. April
10-May 16 for a male turkey, shotgun
or archery. That sure brings back
memories of my life in Montana.
It was shortly after we moved
to our place by the Milk River that
I had my first experiences with wild
turkeys. After living in town for
almost a year, I was anxious to start
country livin’ again and I put my bird
feeders out. I enjoyed the assortment
of the small, feeder-type, seed eating
birds. It wasn’t long though, and
they were eating me out of house and
home.
Or so I thought.
Very soon I was to discover
the real culprits were a flock of 16
turkeys.
The bandits would come early
in the morning, up from the river
bottom, and raid the feeders. They’d
sit on the wooden fence rail and help
themselves. I think the more acrobatic
ones threw seed on the ground for
the less fortunate ones. If that didn’t
produce enough loot, they’d knock
the feeders off and just all forage from
the ground.
