5E Lesson Guide 7 in Science 4: Describe Some Types of Beneficial and Harmful Interactions
Among Living Things. (S4LT-IIg-h-14)

MELCS: Describe Some Types of Beneficial and Harmful Interactions Among Living
Things. (S4LT-IIg-h-14)

TITLE: Friend or Foe: Investigating the Beneficial and Harmful Interactions

Among Living Things

OBJECTIVES:
1. Differentiate beneficial and harmful interactions among living things,
2. Describe some types of beneficial and harmful interactions among lving things.
(S4LT-iig-h-14)
3. Recognize the importance of interactions among living things.

MATERIALS:
 Pictures of an ecosystem
 Manila paper
 Bondpaper
 Whiteboard or chalkboard and markers/chalk

LEARNING PROCEDURE:

ENGAGE
 Show a picture of an ecosystem.
 Ask the students to name organisms that can possibly have an interaction from the picture
shown.

 Let them identify the type of interaction (mutualism, commensalism, predation, parasitism,
competition)

EXPLORE

 Divide the class into small groups.

 In a manila paper, ask each group to accomplish the concept map below.

Among Organisms

Beneficial Harmful

EXPLAIN

 Let each group present their output in class.

 Check if their outputs are correct after each presentation.
 Give additional inputs about their work for better understanding.

ELABORATE

 In a bond paper, have the students create a poster showing a specific type of interaction
among living organisms. It should include an illustration and description of how the
interaction benefits or harms each organism involved.

EVALUATE

MULTIPLE CHOICE. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. The relationship between a clownfish and a sea anemone is an example of which type of
interaction?
a) Predation
b) Competition
c) Commensalism
d) Mutualism

2. How does parasitism differ from predation in terms of the harm caused on the host
organism?
a) Parasitism benefits the host, while predation harms the host.
b) Parasitism involves the death of the host, while predation does not.
c) Parasitism is a long-term association that benefits the host, while predation is a short-
term interaction.
d) Parasitism slowly weakens the host over time, while predation causes immediate death.

3. In a grassland ecosystem, lions and hyenas both prey on the same animals, leading to
intense competition. However, they also scavenge each other's kills at times. This scenario
is an example of:
a) Commensalism
b) Mutualism
c) Predation
d) Both competition and mutualism

4. Which of the following is an example of mutualism?

a) Woodpeckers cleaning parasites off a buffalo's back.
b) Bees pollinating flowers while obtaining nectar.
c) Clownfish living among the tentacles of a sea anemone.
d) Ants farming fungus on leaves they collect.

5. How does commensalism differ from mutualism?

a) Commensalism benefits both interacting organisms, while mutualism benefits only one.
b) Commensalism involves a long-term relationship, while mutualism is short-lived.
c) Commensalism is obligatory, while mutualism is optional for the organisms involved.
d) Commensalism involves one organism benefiting without affecting the other, while
mutualism benefits both organisms equally.
